Due to beginning of the relationship between Winston and Julia this idea that words or actions do not matter and the only thing that matters is what you believe internally serves as an opening to maintaining humanity. Through the extreme torture of individuals the Party is able to make people confess to crimes and brainwash one to obediently follow the Party’s ideas. The government can also cause fear in you to lie and force you to go against your beliefs. By using physical torture to weaken an individual, the Party is able to have complete control over your thoughts and actions. Even if a person does not want to be subject to the ideas of the Party they will follow orders to ensure their safety. The lack of agency creates lifeless people who have lost their humanity out of fear. 

The idea the Party cannot get inside you and force you to believe their teachings sincerely is an important indication of Winston’s character. The Party’s mission is to be able to have control of the individuals and maintain power. The party will eliminate anyone who threatens the power and does not follow their orders. When Winston and Julia are caught nothing will be able to prevent their death. Even if the two star-crossed lovers do confess like the others and are subjected to all forms torture it will not matter. The end result will not change. The only difference is holding onto your feelings in the darkest times helps stop from slipping into a numb state and helps you feel alive. The power to take a life ensures control of the future actions of subjects because the possibility of life will help the Party control society. The Party forms ideas and teachings to push onto the people that claim to help the greater good grow. Happiness is not aloud if it contradicts the Party. To want to obtain anything within your personal identity is opposing or going against the Party.
 
Once you are pinned against them death is only a matter of time. The only opportunity you have at achieving some sort of satisfaction or happiness will be once you are dead and your life is over. The power of the Party is focused on controlling the manner in how the subjects adore the Big brother. Subjects are able to find enjoyment in worshipping the government to help build a mental power over subconscious thoughts. As a result, the citizens of Oceania have a very limited, dull life, and are puppets of the Party. Winston is fully aware of the reality him and Julia face yet still pursues the opportunity in going against government even though it will result in death. Winston is making a conscious decision that even though he can not obtain genuine happiness in this life he will go against the Party since it is his only option at destroying an organization that is corrupting its subjects and degrading individuals for power.

He’s not talking about the actions, or controlling ‘media’, if you will, he’s talking about himself and others’ feelings. That’s personal, deep, and a sensitive subject, especially in this setting. He’s saying that although their government can control every single thing they do, each action/thought/memory… they cannot control or change or shift the people’s feelings. We can’t even do it on our own, which gives them even less power. He’s reaching a personal journey through his enlightenment journey, all at once and really undercovering what’s supposed to be there and why it’s not. After all that's already happened to him and all the risks he's taken, he's made this important realization and is a very accurate and relevant one.

In modern society, no matter how much control is put upon you, whether through other’s in the society or your government, you can’t lose yourself in it, especially your feelings. Although anything can be changed by them, your true feelings will remain what they are and will remain true to you as a whole. Your emotions and feelings are yours to protect, keep and show pride in.

He’s making connections to past rulers who have conquered an entire country and comparing their propaganda tactics to the society he’s in. The rulers have always tried to pass an illusion to the citizens. Whether it’s the illusion of progression, love from the government, or care for the people, the illusion have all been there. And he’s now aware that the government uses those false views to cover up the real aims and goals and true power they have over the citizens. Much like modern times and biased censored media. Censorship, bias media, technology, privacy invasion, and brainwashing plays a huge role in their society but also ours.

Rulers from all regions of the world, all ages and all era’s have tried to impose a false view of the world to their followers. Whether a false view of themselves, their viewpoint or the world in general, the government is a puppet show. No matter what you’re told or what you see, you’re apart of the mess ultimately. Through biased media, you miss the other side of the story that's being screened-altered to a certain viewpoint, all in effort to control your mindset, ideals and opinions on certain topics, groups of people or regions. You must learn to think for yourself and isolate yourself from that trap, just as Winston did.

As he resumes he then explains and realizes the world that they are creating and is causing mass destruction towards the people of Oceania. In this society “Big brother” holds all the power. They have the power to completely tear apart a person down whether it be mentally, physically or emotionally. Further reading leads us to discover that they cannot trust anyone, not even kids. They have gotten to the point where they are to mentally drained to the point where they don't want to think things.

This resonates to modern day society because overtime media outlets have slowly but surely have been able to manipulate the things they out how to make us think that what they are putting out is true. Like the quote says, the media will take apart things that are true and will then reshape it to make it look or sound the way that they want you to think it is. This quote also relates to modern day officials of higher ranking that promise so many things for the people but then do little to nothing to fix the big issues that are happening.

We continue to see them all throughout the book. They are inscribed in the white pyramid of the Ministry of truth. Since these words were introduces so early in the narrative, this helps readers paint a picture of who or what double think is. We discover that by weakening the independence and the metal strength of the people of Oceania, the people live in a state of constant fear allowing the party to take control over them. Even if something seems totally out of the ordinary, the party carries this power to make them do whatever they want due to the fear they induce from the people. As we read about the different ministries we see how manipulating their tactics are to produce that scare factors into the residents of Oceania. For example, the party's theory that "war is peace" makes the people think that having a common enemy keeps the people of Oceania united. 

This all goes back to the whole idea of " big brother is always watching" Through fear and psychological control, the residents of Oceania were not allowed to do anything human-like. They young lady is clearly acting very sexual in this part of the novel. As it is clearly giving vivid images that she is taking off her clothes and throwing it. The man that is observing her shows absolutely no interest in her. As in this novel it was said that most of the time sex was not necessarily used during this age. The less they had it the best it was always thought to be avoided. The only reason why someone would have intimacy would be for procreation. 

The  way that she threw her clothes around made the man lose the interest. The quote clearly is something to talk about as it is very different now. Many people want their sexuality to be respected. Winston was saying that the old man was living way back to the revolutionary war. He mentions the year 1925. The year where he old man is from and now the current year is 1985. Since it surely states that the man is old The old man tells him that now that he is old he feels like there is less pressure on him rather than when he was younger. He tells Winston that once he reaches his age then he will know what you will not be the same. Everything is not the same and there wouldn't be a chance to change it. You're not the same physically and not so healthy.

The old man keeps telling Winston that now that he is old he has good and bad disadvantages. Therefore he states that he has a bladder problem and that he has to get up a lot at night and as I mentioned before he stated that he doesn't have to worry about him having to have a wife and deal with her. He has been without a wife for about 30 years.

This man is moving in position to take power as he steps up the platform and affronts the crowd which emits all sorts of historical dictators stepping up to rule.  

Although this quote has no direct clutch to theme it matters because it contains remnants of Adolf Hitler in the description which is symbolic of totalitarian government. It also matters because Orwell is sending readers a message through this quote and it should be flagged that this is not a good guy and he wants to be in the utmost control.

It means that by telling someone something they are basically brought into the situation, especially within a crime because now they may as well be in trouble since they knew about it as well.

This matters because essentially it is a trap by O’Brien to lure Winston into a trap set up by the Thought Police and not to mention this being their first encounter as well.
