The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has divided almost all of the human pathogens into three categories: Category A, Category B, and Category C. The pathogen that I am choosing is from Category B. This is a mosquito-borne virus called the West Nile virus also known as WNV. This virus originates form Africa. It is also carried by mosquitoes. It is now known to be fine all over the world in multiple different countries.

There are many ways to prevent getting West Nile. For starters, use plenty of bug/ insect repellent to ward off the mosquitoes that carry the virus. Another way to prevent the virus, is by wearing clothes that cover the most skin like pants or long sleeve shirts/jackets. Lastly, make sure to control the population of mosquitoes around you if possible, for example make sure all mosquitoes are gone that might be in your house. These may seem like crazy but they actually will help in the long run.

The West Nile virus can cause many symptoms and so we need to be on the lookout for them when we know we have possibly been bitten. Some of these symptoms deal with the muscles like muscle weakness, numbness, paralysis, tremors, and neck stiffness. Other symptoms include fever, headache, stupor, and disorientation. More sever symptoms include convulsions, vision loss, and possibly being put in a coma. This virus is so bad that people can possibly die from it.

This virus can actually be given to anyone who is bitten by a mosquito that is carrying this virus. It does not matter what their age is, where they are from, their gender, etc. Anyone and everyone can get this virus. Even though everyone can get the West Nile virus, people around 60 years of age and older are at higher health risks. This virus is not to be taken lightly, and that is why we must take every precaution when around the carriers of this virus.

Even in this world of advanced medicine, there is no vaccine or any kind of specific treatment for the West Nile Virus. Many have tried to find a way, and none have seceded. In really bad situations, the patient will most likely have to be admitted to the hospital. This is so they can receive as much treatment as possible for the virus. This includes having a doctor see them, have nurses take care of them during their stay, and most importantly be put on intravenous fluids to keep them hydrated and possibly some pain meds if needed. Even though there is no sure treatment for it, many have recovered and continue to recover from it.
