Capillaries are very thin(one cell thick) This reduces the distance for diffusion to occur and thus, speeds up the rate of diffusion of substances such as O2, CO2,glucose,amino acids and nitrogenous waste between tissue cells and the capillary(endothelial) cells.
The lumen is narrow which slows down blood flow which increases the time for diffusion of substances between the tissue and capillary cells
The structure of the capillary consists of numerous small branches which increases the surface area to volume ratio to increase the rate of diffusion of substances.
