In class, my students are reading The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. Instead of an end of book/unit test, students are completing a problem-based project. The perforance task coincides with our anchor text and problem-based project, but it allows me as an educator to work in another skill that my students have to learn. The main character in the novel is left to face a tough decision at the end of the book. He must decide if he will stay and wait for his family to return, not knowing if they ever will, or he must decide to join the Indian tribe that has welcomed him and helped him to survive during his time alone at his cabin. The 10 year old ultimately chooses to stay. However, this performance task will be done before the end of the book so students are unaware of the outcome.
