The research determines the explanation of academic English adversities of ESL international postgraduate students majoring TESOL at an Australian university.
With quantitative and qualitative methods, the study found that students have adversity in their reading and writing because they only marked through essay assignments as the evaluation of the course. However, their awareness of academic English increases as they start their master’s degree. Furthermore, the ages of the students play a role in their ability to use technology-based facilities. These obstacles also happen with other students in another field of study.

Based on statistic data, 65 % of students with reading adversity will face problem in their writing as well. Moreover, the researchers also revealed that proper use of study facility consequently impacts to the learning quality. Thus, it will lead to academic accomplishment.

The research discovered that there was no relation between IELTS scores and level of educational adversities because they occur in a long term and sustainable. Students are required to prepare before and after enrollment, adapt themselves in Learning Center to minimize the difficulties. Though, students think that the size of the class and the kind of help are still inadequate.

Flowchart 1 indicates academic English proficiency, self-regulation, motivation, self-efficacy, attitudes towards difficulties, prior academic learning, and adjustment were the seven individual keys factors related to academic difficulties. Overall, the students with fast adaptation skills and positive attitudes will ease the pressures better.

(Phakiti, A & Li, L.

Task: Summarize and comment on what you learnt from the video lecture and discussion

The learning methodology will impact to our successes in the study in Australia. However, there are some differences between learning method in Indonesia and Australia that we may have to know.

International students come to Australia with several reasons. Either to prepare their global career or to contribute to their nation. According to the lecture, there is 40 percent Australian residents are migrant, consist of 94 nationalities.

Learning methodology in Australia is very different with Indonesia. In Australia, students are required to have a critical attitude while in Indonesia we only absorb what teachers said. Also, the class session in Australia is fully interactive, in contrast, the teachers are fully dominant in Indonesian classes.

I admire the Australian ways to make the students talks actively in the class. With this kind of activities will results many ideas that can be discussed. Furthermore, we can enhance our knowledge.

4.5M3 Class

During our session at IALF, we are focusing on three main agendas: the preparation about learning system in Australia, cross-cultural knowledge, and IELTS preparation test.

To prepare students with Australian learning method, we are learning many academic activities related to it. Our teacher encourages us to make a lot of summary from different types of text that will improve our reading and writing skills by doing this assignment. We make summaries from the articles, newspaper, class session and submit it into the Padlet, an online virtual bulletin board. Even though I have difficulties in grammar but so far I can feel that my reading and writing skills are improving according to feedback from Simon on my assignments. Another class is computer and information literacy to support our capabilities to use study facilities such as computer room, library, and how to find sources to help us making our assignments.

Secondly, we have a cross-cultural class that learn about what is the appropriate and inappropriate behaviour when we move to Australia. The aim is to provide basic knowledge of Australian culture prior arrival in Australia and to avoid a culture shock that may occur.

IELTS test is also one of our focus during the study period at IALF. Since most of the students have difficulties in writing based on our IELTS score before, but all of the aspects such as reading, listening and speaking are also learnt. In my case, I would like to focus more on writing because my writing score was below the university requirements. Also, most of our assignments in Australia will be in written form. After two weeks joining the class, I can see that my writing skill is improving, I am sure this is happening because we have to do many summaries so it can affect our writing ability.

Overall, the IALF learning methods are appropriate to support students that will study in Australia. Teachers, facilities, resources and the environment in the place of study are integrated and fit with what students need.
