Have students' first project to be writing about something they are passionate about. They may be into sports, a certain television series, or a fandom, etc. They will likely know all the information that they need to know to write this assignment. Doing a project that requires research can be the next step.

Story Problem

Have students write a story with guided rubrics. Then share the story with peers. Peers need to answer a question based on story and that is their claim. Then they find 3 pieces of pieces of evidence that support that claim

Make it a game

Have every student write a claim down. Have them all pass their paper to their left. The student who receives their paper then writes the first statement with evidence. It is passed to the left again, etc. When there are 3 statements for evidence, there should be some pretty ridiculous papers to read aloud that should be amusing for everybody.

Use special interest project

Have students post their 'special interest' project and have peers vote in on which one they feel did the best at making a claim and supporting it with strong evidence.

List and match

Have a story. Provide a claim. Then list all the different things from the story. Some are good evidence and others do not have anything to do with the claim. The story could also be an audio or video. They select the 3 from the list that they think are pieces of evidence. This could also be done with claim statements.

Comics

Have the students create a small comic strip that makes a claim and supports their claim with strong evidence. It could be history based, fantasy based, marvel based, etc. Everything can be made up, but once again, we are leaving the research aspect to the next project. With this they would learn what types of statements are strong as claims and evidence.

Group Presentation

Create groups of 4 where they work together to create content, and then present to the class. One person makes the claim statement, the other three make the statements of evidence. There is an open class discussion about each statement provided where the class can ask questions or provide feedback on the strength of the statements.

Class Discussion

A class discussion about the class period could yield some hilarious results. As a class, make a claim statement about that class period. Then discuss what would make good evidence statements. Post it for students to enjoy.
