The opening scenes of the book and the ideas conveyed:

The opening of the book consists of the narrator at his New England school in the fall of 1960. It is the height of the Kennedy v.s. Nixon presidential election and the narrator takes Kennedy’s side. He said Kennedy’s clothes “under control” and “his wife was a fox.” This demonstrated the common wants of the boys of the time. Not only does he recognize his proper look and beautiful wife, he describes his writing as well. He says that Kennedy would fit right in at his school and he would be a “favorite.” He also explains how writing takes an important role in his life, and he intends to use his writing to pursue one of his dreams.

1. This is a good general summary to start the book. Establishes the main character, setting, and some of the events that are happening. This is a good starting point for the book and understanding what is to come.
2. It seems that both the fact that he dresses nice, has a nice woman, and is an excellent writer all play a role in the narrator’s interest in Kennedy. However, the narrator relates to Kennedy, mostly, through his literature. He says that he’d fit right in at his school and his writings are actually interesting to him. It is obvious that he finds a connection between himself and Kennedy through his writing and that is the main reason why he is interested in him.
3. Yes, the presidential race is an anecdote to the writing competition that is taking place at school. This may foreshadow a personal one-on-one between the narrator and someone else in the writing competition, similar to the one-on-one between Nixon and Kennedy.
