Create a narrative (like the one in the handout) to support your claim. Use all four narrative strategies. Afterwards, review narratives from the other groups, discuss strengths, and rank them.

GEN-ZERS ARE OKAY WITH GIVING AWAY THEIR DATA

A lot of the data that we accept is required for things like school. For example, Google Drive, one of the most commonly used platforms in education, has a Terms and Service agreement saying how and why they collect data. Some teachers and professors require us to use it in order to complete assignments and get a passing grade. The system has its own contract agreement that involves our personal data. Therefore, in order to succeed in our mandatory academics, we're required to give away some data to agree with the terms, even if we're not okay with it.

While Gen Zers like to discover new songs individually, albums provide an effective way to discover new music from songs you already listen to and artitst loyalty and fandom assumes a high priority for Genz. For me, I've found some of my favorite songs and added hundreds of new tracks to my mega-playlist by exploring albums of songs I enjoyed. Additionally, Gen Z also places a large emphasis on connection to the artists they listen to and not just their music. I have found that if a song is from an artist who I listen to and am fond of, I am more likely to listen to more of their music.

For the past couple hours, I have been trying to focus on my research paper. Being distracted by the constant noise surrounding me, it has been difficult for me to focus on my work. However, once I zone out the background noises with audio stimulation, like music or podcasts, I have been able to work thoroughly and get my paper done. Like many of my friends/ fellow students, I consume music purely through audio stimulation, whether it’s through streaming platforms, personal playlists, or live concerts where the music itself is the main attraction. Because of this, I disagree with the claim by Damian Kayne that Gen-Zers need both audio and visual stimulation.

For years, Gen-Zers have been labeled as having short attention spans. This claim mainly ignores the reality of how we engage with content. Instead of a lack of focus, Gen-Zers have developed a highly selective attention span, filtering through massive amounts of information at lightning speed to find what truly matters to them. While we might scroll quickly through TikTok, we also binge-watch hours-long video essays, engage in deep-dive research on niche topics, and spend hours mastering complex skills through YouTube tutorials. We have an ability to hyper-focus on what interests us whether it’s gaming, social activism, or coding and it shows that our attention span isn’t short but rather adaptive.
