While it the plight before her is one that doesn’t look to harm her physically, but either emotionally or financially. She looks to be smuged in small grains of dirt, so her working on a farm is a probably the case. And with the black and white photo, it’s easy to think that this is something from the dust bowl. Something along the lines of her family losing their crops to the bowl, the events following being ones that are amongst the worst to go through. And so the esteem of the woman and her family are struck down, their previously tough life taking a hard turn as they struggle to keep their land, the equivalent of their life.
