"The Sandwich Swap," by Queen Rania, is a story about 2 school-aged girls, Lily and Salma. The girls do everything together, even eat lunch together. What they eat, however, is not the same. Lily eats PB & J and Salma eats a hummus and pita sandwich everyday. Both girls thought the other's sandwich looked gross and one day, they couldn't hold it in any longer.

After their argument, neither of the girls did their typical activities together like coloring pictures or jumping rope. They didn't even eat lunch together. The other students had heard about the girls argument and had begun to pick sides, saying nasty things to the opposing side, before food starting flying in the cafeteria. At that point, the girls felt ashamed of their argument and what they saw in each other.

The next day, the two sat together again, eating their sandwiches before Salma spoke up and asked if Lily would like to try a bite of her sandwich. The girls traded halves and found the other's to be delicious. That led the girls to ask the principal if they could do something for the whole school; all families were invited to bring a food from their culture to share.

1. This book is very versatile as it can be used in all elementary grade levels with all genders, even though the two main characters are girls.
2. The ending of the book shows several international flags. This would be a good way to introduce that different countries have certain things that make them unique from others, like food which was the case in the story.
3. The events in the story share several great messages, one being that if you do something wrong like start a food fight there will be consequences. Even when something bad happens, you can turn it around to make it positive.

1. I would use this in the beginning of the school year as students are introducing themselves and starting to see differences in each other.
2. I would also use this book throughout the year if I see a problem arising to remind students that we can all be different and friends at the same time.
3. This book would be a great introductions in Social Studies when learning about different cultures and discussing how food can be a major part of culture.
