• The Bedouin once settled the desert in Arish, which are groups of four or five distinct homes or rooms. 
• They erected them periodically in some regions when they travelled between oasis and coast, and more permanently in others. They have a 20-year lifespan. 
• The palm-leaf dwellings varied depending on where you were in the region.  For example,  the Bedouin in Liwa left the tops of the palm leaves long and brush-like for their Arish. These tops were trimmed. Palm-leaf was weaved in multiple layers, known as Hassir, in locations more prone to sand storms. 
• The structures were built by women, who sang and told stories as they worked. To soften the palm leaves, they washed them in water, sometimes digging deep into the sand to find moisture and burying them there. 
• They made rope out of palm trunk fibers, wove a mat out of leaves, and tied them together to form sections of wall that could be rolled up and moved as needed. 
• There were other rooms for women and children, as well as a kitchen. Some featured a modest laundry room.
