My personal best leadership experience was in the army, I was a Lieutenant of the SAF. I have always wanted to positively impact others and have my guys be inspired and motivated to do their best at all times. Missions after missions, my guys get tired and feel unmotivated at times as they do have anything to look forward to in the army. As their officer, what I did was to set up a Platoon and company spirit. Through competitions (opening opportunities for them to show their skills/ talents), getting to know them individually and recognising different efforts that they have put in. Ultimately for me, my goal is to have my guys be united, set a common goal and be highly spirited. Throughout one year, I could see growth in my company (Be it, fitness, teamwork, etc). I was very happy with all their contributions to their personal development. Then, one day, my company did a surprise for me to nominate me and wrote a letter to the commanding officer and I received an award for being the best, influential and determined officer in the unit. That award I dedicated to my platoon & company. One thing I've learned throughout this experience is that being a leader is not just a title but taking the extra miles to create opportunities for others to be engaged, enabled and empowered. That's where you will see growth in every individual.

When i was in primary school, i was the team captain for the volleyball team. I had to lead a team of 12 players throughout competitions and trainings. I was required to recite long speeches on award ceremonies. This was my favorite part of primary school as i felt happy to forge strong bonds between my friends and was able to hold victories with my team, with the upmost pride and confidence. This taught me to be empathizing and caring as each and every teammate is different. i learned that teamwork and synergy is important as if the team is not motivated, the abilities and skills will be greatly affected. therefore, during that time, i was loud and noisy during games so as to lift the spirts of my friends.

My personal best leadership experience was being a class monitor of my class, 2G. At the start, my class was really rowdy and unorganised and didn’t follow instructions even from teachers, let alone the class monitors. However, after some time we changed our leadership method from a more aggressive and strict one to a much nicer one where we got to know each and every one of our classmates individually and didn’t exactly force our methods onto them. Over time, the class started listening to us and accepted us as class monitors, and this way we were able to create a very strong class bond through activities, camps etc. I learnt not to give up when encountered with difficulties and also how to adapt to the situation because at the start we couldn’t get the job done but we changed our methods and adjusted them accordingly to achieve our final goal which was ultimately creating a strong class bond and class culture.

(y’all might be able to see the strong class bond in the class pic right? welp)

During a certain group project, most groupmates (including me) felt that there was no point in putting in so much effort just for 10% as we disliked the subject and only did the bare minimum, however, I felt that despite how much hate we had for the subject, we still had to complete the project. I had to take initiative and encourage everyone to complete the project even if we were not interested in the subject. This taught me that our mindset is the most important thing and whatever actions we do is closely linked to it.

My team was actually losing 4-1 and we were slowly giving up. I thought that it was still possible for us to win the match and I constantly motivated the team. Slowly, we utilised the other team's mistakes and scored goals. In the end, we won the other team 5-4. What I learnt from it are that determination rewards you and that motivation and someone that constantly gives support will help you to never give up.

I think that my best leadership experience was in primary school, during the NSG for hockey in primary 6. It was a very important moment for me as I felt that it was the very first time where I had much importance in a match. Even though I am no captain or vice captain of the team, there was this one game where the captain was injured and the vice was subbed out, and we were losing 1-0, with only 5 minutes left. At that time, I was also sick, thus it was very tiring for me to play. However, since that was the last chance we had, I encouraged all my teammates to work together and finish strong, and we managed to turn the tables and score twice to win the game. Thus from this experience, I can conclude that we should always start strong, finish stronger, and that constantly motivating your peers not only boosts their morale but also helps them to better themselves. Thus even without me being a captain or vice, I stood up to lead the rest of my teammates.

My personal best leadership experience was in Primary School. In P5 and P6 I was a prefect and in P6 as a senior prefect I had to teach my juniors how to manage and operate the PA system in the school for morning assembly. It was quite difficult as my juniors were all nervous and scared that they would press the wrong button and the whole school would see that they had made a mistake. Me and my fellow senior prefect had to slowly encourage and teach my juniors to use and operate the PA system and eventually they were able to work together as a team under both me and my fellow senior prefects guidance. From this experience I was able to learn to lead with patience and I learned that leadership involves encouraging, guiding and much more, contrary to what many people think that leadership is all about instructing.

In fact, it was my first concrete leadership experience as I was not given much opportunities in primary school. It was a very meaningful and fun journey as I was able to communicate with my seniors who taught and honed our skills to be able to take care after a class by ourselves. Our seniors gave us important criticism that we used to improve ourselves in future sessions :).

My best personal leadership experience was during a PSLE post-exam activity where I had to lead a group of 10 people to come up with an activity for elderlies at an old folks home. I came up with two activities, singing old songs and a small miniature football game using paper. One problem I faced was that I was the only one doing all the planning. This was mainly because my teammates did not see any need or purpose of doing the activity and they found post-exam activities useless. I felt like giving up as noone else was doing anything to contribute to the team effort. However, I managed to bring the team together by setting deadlines and delegating tasks. I learnt, being a leader, we must take the initiative to gather teammates and ensure they are proactive and we must not give up even if it gets tough. I also learnt that communication is a key aspect of leadership as without me delegating tasks there will be a lack of participation and members will do things their own way.

For this year's Drama SYF, I was the oldest member of the main cast, and I had the opportunity to lead my CCA mates and juniors when preparing for the performance. It was a difficult process, as we faced many restrictions and challenges due to COVID. Everyone had contributed and put in much effort in the preparation, and I did the same, encouraging my juniors when they felt down and staying back to help my juniors to practice. We ended up achieving the distinction grade, and I felt joyous that I had successfully led the team amid the various challenges we faced due to COVID. I have learnt that leadership is not a title, as leadership can emerge in anyone in different environments, and it came as a natural thing for me in this case without anyone instructing me or specifically assigning me the role of a leader.

I was at a loss of what to do as we had to set it up before the other students came. thus i just went up to them to ask them to help out and i realised that me asking them to help out could already cause them to help, making me learn that sometimes i need to "nudge" people to help out, just by politely asking them to do so would make them help and there is no need to shout which was what i did when i wanted my classmates to keep quiet during class time. this also made me learn that respect is needed to be a good leader

My personal best leadership experience was during a debate competition in primary school. I was in debate starting from primary 3, I was in the school team for table tennis before, and I became my debate team's leader during primary 5. Honestly speaking, my team was not the best in debating and lacked self-esteem. Thus, it was a surprise for us that we qualified for quarter-finals. During the quarter-finals of the debate competition, there was an impromptu round where we would have to prepare our debate scripts on the day itself. My team received a debate topic that we were quite unfamiliar with so my team was panicking while we were making the debate scripts. It was a first for us to take part in an impromptu debate session and we got a topic which seemed new for most of us so it would make sense that they would be very stressed out. We were all over the place during the script making. Hence, I had to step up as a leader and I started guiding my teammates through the script making. I made sure to convince them to not give up until the very end. THus, their morale was much better afterwards. Unsurprisingly, we won that debate but lost at the semi-finals but we were happy since we gave our best till the very end. I learnt from this experience that I should keep being optimistic during a challenge and I should step up as a leader when times are tough

I was provided with the opportunity to go to Cambodia to carry out community work there. I helped to plan a sporting event where the needy children in Cambodia would participate in. During the process of planning, i faced many challenges and my mind was filled with many thoughts such as 'Will they enjoy this activity?', 'Will they understand what the activities are?' etc. When i reached Cambodia, the atmosphere was very different. The weather was very cold and all. I learnt that we Singaporeans, living in a first world country, are very privileged. We need to appreciate the things we have with us and not be too complacent about it. Empathy was also something that I learnt. Not everyone is as privileged as us. However, since we were are more privileged, it is important for us to lend a helping hand to those who are in need. At Cambodia, I was heartened to see the needy children at their school. Their school facilities were very different than that in Singapore. Many things were different there. However, we are all still humans and we need to help one another out in any way possible. During the sporting event organised by us for the children, they were smiling and had a lot of fun. I feel very heartened to see this happening. They were looking forward to seeing us the next year. However, COVID-19 struck us all, and we were not able to go there again last year and this year. Despite this, I would always remember to think of others and be open minded at all times.

My best leadership experience was my primary school leadership camp in 2018 when I was P5. My school(Cedar primary) was merging with MacPherson Primary school. So in order to prepare us for the journey together with them from the next year onwards, this leadership camp took place and both students from Cedar Primary and MacPherson Primary were taking part in it. In that camp, I had to lead my team in the activites as they had assigned me as the leader. A very important question that I had learnt in the camp was that developing good relationships with your team mebers are key in douing anything as a team. This is becuase we had actually we completeled activites at a slower rate and leess effectively when we didn´t really have much of a understanding between each other and when we started communicating well and developing realtionships, we could do things way more quickly and more easily.

My proudest moment in the camp was where we were able to work together as a team and create bonds along the way. This was especially at the amazing race. Personally, I feel that it was both fun and provided a valuable bonding experience. It was also able to show us what we can do with cohesion and combined efforts.

Even thought I was sad, Ryan said it was ok and I felt more relieved, Thank you, Ryan! Small things go a long way :D

My proudest moment of day 2 of Veloci-T was during the mosaic activity as I felt my group was able to assign and agree on who should paint which part of the picture quickly and we were able to work together and help each other out when anyone had a problem. For example, we helped each other out when they couldn't find a good shade of a certain colour of if they were unsure if their sketch matched the picture given.

I think that someone who is worth mentioning is definitely Matthew. During these two days, I have definitely seen much growth and development in him, as he is a very good role model who would follow the instructions very carefully and also set a good example for the rest of us. He also manages to challenge the process and look at things from many views and tries his best to perfect it and take risks.

In this camp, a very important thing that I learnt is that recognizing team members' efforts, be it small or big, it actually impacts them a lot and motivates them a lot too. I also learnt that it is very important to appreiciate the process of leadership and leading our team members is very important( even more important than acheiving the goal). I feel that after I learnt these two important things, I feel proud of actually implementing my lessons later on in Veloci-T
