1. In my exploration of American School Counselor Association, I came across the legal and ethical issue of gun safety. The ASCA is opposed to Betsy DeVos' proposal of allowing federal funds to arm schools and train teachers in firearm use. The statement they issued suggests that a better solution is to focus on increasing student support professionals and implementing prevention and intervention practices (ASCA, 2018).
2. The exploration also revealed that the ASCA also was affected by the changes made that came with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This new law allows for implementation of more counseling programs and gives Title II counselors access to federal professional development dollars. The ASCA believes the new allocation of money will allow schools to implement a more well-rounded education for all students (ASCA, 2018).

American School Counselor Association. (2018).
Step 5: Implications for School Counselors

About 30 percent of students in U.S. schools are undocumented (Storlie, C.A., & Jack, E.A., 2012). This is expected to increase to one in every three students by 2040. As school counselors, it is our legal and ethical obligation to assist all students, documented or not, in attaining a quality education. Undocumented students bring obstacles unique to their circumstances ranging from low socioeconomic status and lack of parental support to emotional turmoil from leaving a homeland and inability to speak the English language (Morrison, S. S., Walley, C. T., Perez, C. P., Rodriquez, S., Halladeen, I., & Burdier, V., 2016). All of these obstacles make it critical for school counselors to be prepared to address each need for each undocumented student in order to make a difference.

Counselors must understand not only the needs of the students, but need to understand the differences in cultures and values and the importance of being sensitive to these differences. This type of cultural awareness can help to establish an accepting environment for these students. School counselors must also be aware of the various limitations (by law) that may also hinder success for undocumented success. For example, if in a future situation a counselor is helping an undocumented student to get into a college, it is important to know the state laws on financial aid for undocumented students so that that information can be relayed to the student correctly.

Educators can work together to give undocumented students the best future possible in the United States. With an understanding of the technical challenges, and knowledge of how to handle the social, emotional, and academic challenges, educators can begin to make a difference in the lives of all students including those who are undocumented.

Morrison, S.

1. Exploring National School Boards Association led me to find a legal guide that addresses student rights and the first amendment, the right to free speech. The guide explains what rights students have and to what extent. It also addresses the same rights of school employees. There is not always a perfect answer, but in general, a school can limit speech that has the intention or ability to disrupt the learning process or put anyone at harm. Determining the level of disruption is up to the courts (NSBA, 2018).
2. I also explored some information on curriculum and standards and the NSBA's stance on Common Core State Standards. The federal government was not involved in creating the Common Core State Standards, but they do encourage states to use them. The NSBA supports the state's freedom of implementation of standards in hopes that this would allow adjustments to be made based on student needs at the local level (NSBA, 2018).

National School Boards Association.
