Former President Lyndon B. Johnson gave this speech to the United States Congress. Johnson probably had to keep in mind that at that time, a good portion of the population of Congress were xenophobic and didn't want change. Because of this audience, he had to use real life situations to help open the eyes of those congressmen.
http://www.thesmokingbud.com/sites/default/files/011517/Congress.jpg (Picture)

Johnson uses repetition quite a bit in his speech. For example, when he says, "So it was at Lexington and Concord. So it was a century ago at Appomattox. So it was last week in Selma, Alabama," the "so it" parts repeat three times. They way he used this phrase multiple times allows the reader/ listener to really wrap their head around what is being said. It allows the words to go into our minds and really help us understand what he is saying.

Towards the end of his speech, Johnson uses rule of three when he says the words, "These are the enemies—poverty, ignorance, disease—they are our enemies, not our fellow man, not our neighbor," he says the words poverty, ignorance, and disease in a sequence of three. He uses rule of three a good bit and it really has an impact on the way we hear the speech. It allows the reader/listener to remember these words in a way that they will cherish in their hearts.

Johnson uses plain-folks when he speaks about the "dignity of man." When Johnson says this quote, "I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy," he shows that he is speaking for everyone and is for everyone. He implies that he is not doing this for himself, but for the people of the USA. This allows to reader/listener to feel like they are part of his plan when really, he is the only one that will be signing the bill.
