Division of Labor

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/11/nyregion/long-island/11Rhome.html

Although this article is mainly referring to the division of labor in marriage it is relevant to the workplace as well, just as the book talks about. Division of labor is crucial in every part of our lives because we are just one person and most of the time we can't do everything in the timeframe expected whether it is in our personal or professional life. This is why there are several departments at my job so that people can have specialized tasks and not have to take care of too broad of a scope of things. This helps me to appreciate the breakdown of a company into departments. It also inspires me to be conscious of how me and my wife divide the labor of the household work, given that we both work full time jobs.

Delegation

Delegation is a powerful tool that I must use every day at work. This tool is what allows projects and tasks to get done in a timely manner because one person cannot physically do everything. Some people have a problem with delegation because it means giving up some authority. Once I understood the amount of responsibilities I had in my position I had no problem delegating as much as I could so that, as a team, we could get everything necessary done.

Clear Job Description

Unclear job descriptions, in my opinion, are a large reason for unhappiness in the workplace and a reason people change positions or leave a company. Sometimes clarification is needed to understand the scope of what is expected of an employee in their day-to-day tasks so they know what they will be held accountable to. Studying job descriptions through the reading has caused me to evaluate and analyze my job description as well as meeting with a superior to ask for clarification of my job description.

After learning about the different types of organizational culture, I was able to diagnose my company as market culture. This means that we value stability and are focused externally on our members. Understanding this gives me a better idea of what is expected of me and the company so that I can better perform.
