Ben Ratliff's book helped me to be able to look at and understand a multitude of new strategies used in music. He enabled me to listen to music and understand the work that went into it better through his book. I very much enjoyed receiving this perspective on music but this book wasn't without some faults. I felt that the strategies he introduced were interesting and when you could actually understand what he was talking about, they really made an impact on your outlook towards music as a whole. These strategies though interesting to learn about, were described in a manor that you truly had to comprehend every word that Ratliff was saying in his book. His over-analyzation of the subject may seem great to some but it was tiresome for others. I felt that he could've used better analogies and less confusing wording to describe his strategies within the book. I found myself many times having to read a chapter a 2nd time to even understand what it was he was talking about. There were many times that I didn't even truly grasp the subject of the chapter and just had to guess in my Padlet. I have no doubt that Ratliff knows what he is talking about but to me his wording is too abstract and not understandable. I have been in my school districts band program since middle school so I would like to think that I have a basic understanding of the inner working of music. I very much enjoyed learning about the strategies that many writers and composers of music use to make their songs what they are but I found it difficult to truly understand what these strategies were by reading Ratliff's book. I would suggest looking for another book to teach out of for the next semester.
