Representation in Trainspotting

In Trainspotting, the film presents different attitudes towards gender and is explored through the different characters. An example of Trainspotting subverting gender roles is through Allison and her performance. Typically, a mother is a maternal figure whereas Allison is quite promiscuous and frequently uses drugs.
In the club scene, Renton's costume subverts male gender roles as he is wearing a crop top which is seen as being a feminine piece of clothing and is non-traditional to masculinity.

One of the most memorable scenes in This is England is the ending when Shaun gets rid of the England flag given to him by Combo. This symbolises how he is getting rid of the nationalistic views he held for a brief amount of time because of his realisation of the consequences that come from that lifestyle. This shows that after discovering how Combo really is he is now ashamed of his own identity and wants to be disconnected from it.
Combo very heavily believes that nationalism is the main factor in being British, he very clearly believes that immigrants and multiculturalism is changing Britain in a bad way. A key scene in which this is expressed is during the nationalist meeting that the gang attend. Combo expresses a great interest in what the speaker is saying because he is sharing a similar ideology and provides Combo with a sense of belonging within that radical group.

The Skinhead Movement - a subculture originating among working class youths in London in the 60s, it soon spread through the whole of England with a second working class skinhead movement spreading worldwide in the 80s. It started as a very multicultural movement that bonded people through class and the love of the same music, not colour. However during the 80s they became more inspired by violent, more punk music instead of the music from black culture and turned to more racist, nationalistic views.
Thatcher - Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in the 80s and had very anti socialist views which made her unlikeable to the lower class. She believed that if you were poor and didn't have a job it was your own doing and she shouldn't have to do anything to help. It was also her that sent soldiers to the Falkland War which was a complete disaster, resulting in 255 British servicemen and 3 female Falkland island civilians were killed.

Key Scenes in TSP

FThey give the message of hating their nationality in the scene where Renton is saying that it's 'shite being Scottish', which shows his distaste towards his nationality and how much he is willing to complain about it. It (obviously) sends the message that being Scottish is rubbish, but it also sends the message that he doesn't value being Scottish and that no one should because it's that bad. As no one argues with Renton about his speech of having their nationality of Scottish being 'shite', it may show they have the same values as him and equally dislike their nationality.
Another key scene in Trainspotting is when Renton move away to England and appears to be happier, which shows he values another nationality better than his own. It may further show that he would be happier elsewhere so that he can move on with his life which may give the message to the audience that sometimes you have to move to somewhere so that you can be happier in yourself, which may be a positive message to audiences.
The first scene in Trainspotting shows the values of drugs, which is hedonism for the characters as they endulge in the pleasures of drugs and make it look like drugs are great. Renton says 'who needs life when you've got drugs', which shows how they're glorifying the drugs since they're (from Renton's words) better than life itself, which gives you the drugs to begin with.
One key scene (for friendship) shows how Renton is willing to betray his friends for some money, which shows how he values money more than his 'so called mates'. This shows the message that you have to betray your friends if you want to do something good for yourself, even if the consequences hurt others around you.
