In February of 2012, I remember coming home from elementary school, putting my bag and books down, and noticing how my mom just turned on the news. I remember how it was talking about a young black man named Trayvon Martin who was unarmed and carrying a bag of skittles and was murdered by a police officer claiming that he did it in self-defense. After hearing about this going on for a couple of days my mom started lecturing me about how to act if a police officer approaches me. Say yes sir, yes mam, and no talking back. She also said that now that this has happened, I am not allowed to wear my hood out while walking or in general. After this happened the organization Black Lives Matter (BLM) started to take off every time you would turn on the tv there would be a justice protest for what happened, being young and seeing people of all color come together made me feel really good.
Seeing and experiencing racism my whole life has made me realize that there are things I can and cannot do compared to a white person. For example, being out late with friends, I can do it but I will not be as safe compared to a white person that is out late with their friends. With everything that has been going on in our country with Trayvon Martin Brianna Taylor and George Floyd, I feel like we are coming closer as a whole when the race is being brought up. I feel like people of color being treated differently are starting to catch on with white people, and they are trying to help us feel more comfortable in public and around them. I think they are also starting to become more aware of the things they are saying. (305)

In order to work with and find the answers to my critical question, I found 5 great articles that are all in my annotated bibliography, that talk about all the things we can do to stop racism or come close to doing so. There are many different ways that these articles have suggested doing so, and I think some of them can be successful. I have also written a personal narrative that connected my life to my critical question.

After reading through these articles I have found some critical things about racism in the United States. One thing that I have found is that racism can be stopped. However, it isn't easy. From doing research I have learned that racism is a part of a person's consciousness. Children are more sensitive to the looks of colored minorities. That means black children recognize white faces more easily than white children recognize black faces. This can be changed if parents teach their kids growing up to not just see a person for their skin color. Instead, they should get to know them and what their features are. Studies are showing that people can change their mindset if they are just simply educated on the issue. As a community this is what we have to do. The first thing that we would educate people on would be their prejudice, and how it can affect those who don't have the same prejudice as them. It always helps to have an open mind when it comes to bettering yourself and the people around you. I also learned that if we come together and work as one we can make the United States better than it has ever been.

What I still wonder is how long it will take until we put an end to racism. I know racism will never stop, but I feel if we educate enough people and talk about it more we can tone it down. This is compared to how it has been historically. As a country, I feel like we are almost there, but we still have a long way to go. (352)
