1. The tittle of the chapter represents how Vladek Spiegelman felt about the situation with Lucia. The cartoon drawn within the tittle page demonstrates the amount of passion as well as interest that Lucia felt for Vladek including her trouble letting him go.

2. Once significant event of this chapter is Vladek's son meeting Mala step mother since he notices the treatment in which his dad treats her. The second event is , getting know the details on how he meet Lucia Greenberg and how it impacted the life of his parents meeting. Vladek explains that meeting his mom Anja was because of one of his cousins and including the fact that they clicked right away. Another significant event is Lucia's angry letter about how bad of man Vlasdek is since it impacted the perfect relationship they had since he had to give explanations. At last is finally marrying Anja which was Vladek's purpose of showing his son all he did to get his mother.

3. The irony of the conversation between Artie and Vladek is that he tells him not to share his personal stories but yet he makes a book about everything his dad tells him about the Holocaust.

1. The tittle foreshadows that this is the time shortly after Vladek and Anja have been married, including the fact of the amount of irony since honeymoons are solely happiness and that wasn't the case. The image foreshadows Vladek's first encounter with the Nazis on their way to the sanitarium.

2. The first important event is that during Vladek did not know about Anja being involved with the communist therefore she had to hide her papers and not get caught by the police. Second major event is that their son, Richiev was born and was known to the a big baby. Third significant event is that Anja suffered from depression and the doctor recommended a sanitarium, and on their way they witness a town that banned Jews. Fourth event was significant because the impact of the The Nazis was hitting their city which made Anja make a rude comment about Poles, which one of them was her son's baby-sitter. The last significant event of this chapter was that Vladek was picked for the draft and therefore everyone knew that the war had began.

3. Germans's are prayed as cats since they thought of themselves superior to the Jews. Polish people are represented as pigs. I agree with Spiegelman portraying people as different animals since it helps show how people are viewed by the society.

4. Vladek is a very honest man as well as good citizen, he is willing to upfront about any situation and sacrifices for his family. He showed this when he traveled to explain to Anja about the whole situation with Lucia. Another instance is when he went to the sanitarium with Anja and when he got back he had to leave them to fight for his country.

1. The image and the tittle foreshadow the situation that Artie is put into as a soldier, which is a prisoner of war for the Germans.

2. One of the significant event of this chapter is the emphasis on Artie always having to push through eating his food as well as finishing it. This shows the teachings the Vladek emphasized on his son, which is perseverance. The second event is that during his time in the trenches he got into trouble for not shooting and the suddenly he hit a tree and killed a man. Third even is that he got taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans since they noticed that his gun was hot from shooting. Fourth event includes the bad treatment and lack of foos given to the jews like him and then the sudden rise to an actual bed and food for hard work. The fifth event is that he obtained freedom after pushing through all the bad times he had and he was finally reunited with his son and wife.

3. Spiegelman shows the depict of Jews by the hitting with guns and even starving them as well as making them do a lot of harsh work.

4. The incident with Artie's coat displays the constant disagreements between their relationship (father-son) which enables the reader to comprehend that the Vladek is more old school and he wants his son to be just like him. On the other hand. Artie emphasizes that they are both super different and that his father should respect him the way he is.

Spiegelman uses dialogue as well as commentary to bring the characters to life, as a comic book I think this is beyond essential since as the reader the context is very easy to understand and follow. The diction within the book is very simple even though there are terms such as "P.O.W. Camp" or "Parshas Truma" that require some research. Because of the topic of the book there is a lot of references to WW2 and key players like the Hitler

1. The tittle foreshadows how the situation with the Jews raises along with Hitler. Therefore the picture is able to convey the struggle of a mice with the new situation that is arising.
2. By introducing the family with panning, Spiegelman is able to show a visual of the family members as well a little about their personality that can be obtained from looking at the comic. This way the reader knows more about the character when it is brought up again.
3. Vladek lies to his family about the amount the amount of money he really has because he wants to protect them. This is because some Jews had been hanged since they were involved in under the water business. This shows that Vladek is the type of character that wants to keep this under control as well as looking out for his family.
4. Spiegelman includes a poster that states " Reward for every unregistered jew you find: 1 kilo of sugar" , this is a motivation for Poles to notify the Germans about the Jews.
5. Vladek first heard about Auschwitz early within the Holocaust but he most defiantly could not believe it.
6. It was difficult for Vladek and the family to decide whether or not they wanted to attend the stadium thing because they didn't know whether it was trap or not. This was tricky since the called for all jews to report and they ended up picking certain Jews to continue living among them while ending the life of others.
7. Vladek witnessing the situation in Ilzecki while trying to visit an old friend, he is able to experience fist hand how bad the situation is becoming. Second meaningful event is the hanging of the family out in the square and the impact it made on Vladek since he was doing under the water things like them. Third event is being caught by the police and banging to escape when he got lucky by saying he was delivering for a store. Forth meaningful event is the announcement of everyone requesting to be at the stadium to inspect and renew papers. This was significant that he doubted whether or not they should attend it as a family. Lastly, the fifth significant event is that Anja saw her father cross over the side that was being exterminated because her sister was there.

1. The picture foreshadows the tight space in which the mice will be spending their time hiding out from the Germans. The tittle represents that it is basically like a mouse hole since they are there for protection and they are pretty much living there, trying to survive.
2. First significant event is that Artie find out the his father read the comic strip that he made about his mom during college. The comic strip was sort of hatred towards his dad because of the death of his mother. Second meaningful event is that Richiev is sent off with his cousins, aunt and uncle to a safer place to survive the war. Third major event is that Tosha took her life along with her kids and her nephews since she refused to put them through the gas chambers. Fourth event that was significant was Vladek, Anja, Mr. and Mrs. Zylberberg where the only one left and are hiding out. Fifth significan event was Vladek bringing Artie to the bank to show his all the riches that he has stored there, which are saved from evil Anja according to Vladek.
3. The Prisoner comic upsets Vladek because it demonstrates how his son, Artie, really feels about the situation with his mother. Vladek is also upset because it reminds him the amount of love he had for Anja.
4. The page 121 makes me truly sympathize to the amount of trouble that the Jews went through. This really something that the readers are not exposed to but this serves as an inside view.
5. Vladek and his family betrayed by a Jew since he tells them where they are hiding out. Therefore, the were exposed and struggled for a little.
6. The crossroads that Vladek and Anja encountered are placed by Spiegelman to show that all paths lead the encountering the Germans. This is because the crossroad is presented by the Nazi symbol therefore they will end up with major problems with the Germans.
7. I somewhat believed Vladek's comments about Mala but I also think that Vladek is not being completely open living a life with Mala. I also think that Vladek is still caught up in the past including all the wonderful memories that had with Anja but at the same time he hasn't given Mala a chang

1. The tittle and the illustration indicate the amount trouble that Vladek and Anja will face since they have basically walked into the trap like mice being caught by trying to obtain the cheese.
2. The first significant event was Vladek and Anja struggling to find a place to hide out but they were ratted out by one of the neighbors which made Anja feel exposed and beyond nervous. Second meaningful event is when Anja and Vladek go back to the hiding place with the barn and the owner keeps treating them that she will not protect them. Third meaningful event is Vladek tells Anja about moving to Hungary to get away from the war. Vladek was waiting for the letter of his cousin telling him that they were safe so that they could make the smuggling trip as well. Fourth significant event is that the Germans caught Anja and Vladek and sent them to a prisoner camp. Upon their arrival to the camp they were separated and they lost communication. Fifth and most significant event is when Artie learns that his father burned off his mother's journals one day that he was mad. This action was shocking full of anger to Archie that he even called his dad a murderer of his mother's words, this was mainly because he wanted to include them within his comic book.
3. Artie's dilemma at the beginning of the chapter is that he needed to find a the correct character to symbolize and represent this father within the comic book he was making. Artie also depicts the negative traits that his father up holds.
4. Anti-semitism is being passed down from generation by generation since the children don't know any better therefore they are shaped by the opinions of their families against Jews. Children will see Jews like inhuman or even monsters.
5. Artie calls Vladek a "murderer" because he destroyed everything that was left of his mother, Anja. I agree with Artie's anger since he really wanted to include his mother's point of view within the comic book. I also think that he really didn't meant it but his anger took over.

MAUS II CHAPTER 1 RESPONSE QUESTIONS

1. The tittle of the chapter indicates that it will take place within a German city/town. The illustration shows that a mouse (Vladek) is within a prisoner camp since he is wearing the famous striped uniforms. Therefore all of his foreshadows the concentration camp that Vladek is encountering.
2. The first meaningful event within chapter one is the fact that Mala left Vladek, which made Artie quickly move to see and aid his father. Second significant event is when Artie and his wife were trying to help Vladek with the papers and he pretty much said that they were useless and sucked at helping, this later translated into taking a walk to make the anger from both parties go down. Third event that is significant is the conditions that Vladek is describing about the prisoner camps, the lack of hygiene attention as well as clothing benefits to the prisoners. this is the most meaningful event because it demonstrates another view of many of what is like to be in concentration camp. Fourth event that is significant is that Vladek got picked out by a German officer because he spoke very good English. Vladek was able to get the humanity needs that are needed as well a lots of food in exchange to teaching English to the officer. Fifth significant event of chapter one is Artie realizes that the Holocaust has really influenced how his father sees the world, this is because he sneaks into the a club just to play bingo instead of becoming a member like everyone else.
3. Artie wondered if him and Richiev would have gotten along, but he also realizes that his parents were devastated when they found out that their kid had died. Artie also felt like his brother was perfect since he didn't misbehave and seemed to have followed the rules.
4. The Polish Priest tries to cheer up Vladek by giving him hope within his identification number. The priest stated that his number started with 17 meaning that it was good luck and that all of his numbers added to 18 which was "CHAI", the Hebrew number of life.
5. Mandelbaum is the tendency of the
eye to focus nearby conduits of poor visibility.
6. Vladek has been more open to telling his son about his life during the war. Artie was able ask his father about the concentration camp and when he was separated from his wife, Vladek did not avoid the question. Vladek was also happy to answer his sons questions about the story like when he asked him to elaborate on his identification numbers.
7. Mauschwitz refers to Auschwitz which is related directly to the Holocaust. Catskills means the Germans classic move or something that they are categorized by.

MAUS II CHAPTER 2 RESPONSE QUESTIONS

1. During the pages of 40-47, Artie portray himself as the author of the book rather than the son of the main character. This adds more perspective to the book in the sense of being able to recognize as the reader that the author is actually telling a story within his point of view. The most significant detail is that he diminishes himself from the other characters within the comic strip, I believe this is because he was going through a crisis of what to do with his book. Showing that Artie's problems are bigger than him and that he can't seem to conquer them at the moment is truly making him struggle as a person. The progression of Artie getting bigger portray the confidence that he feels with the decisions that he is making towards his book.
2. Vladek describes the things he encounters while being in the concentration camp. He explains that he becomes a shoe maker and gains a status within the camp. Vladek explains the concentration camp's map as well as the "showers" the Jews where put in including how other Jews by burning the bodies within their graves.
3. The ironic part at the end of the chapter is that Artie is back to the same size as normal since he has found his way back to book. Artie shows that is back on dominating how to present the comic book in a meaningful message to the audience.

MAUS II CHAPTER 3 RESPONSE QUESTIONS

1. First meaningful event is when Vladek wants Artie to take home all of the food since he will not eat it. Artie doesn't understand why his father would not throw away the little bit of food left, the reason is because of the lack of food he suffered from during his time in the concentration camp. Second meaningful event was when Vladek and the whole concentration camp where taking the walk to Germany since the war was starting to collapse. Third significant event is when Vladek is taking advantage of his blanket having to make a little business and to stay healthy . Fourth event includes Vladek being really sick and being released in exchange for prisoners in a train that took Vladek to Switzerland. Last meaningful event is Vladek's reactions to letting a hitchhiker ride with them but what bothered him the most is the skin color of the man.
2. Vladek think that Artie is crazy for sharing the story about the revolt of the Jews towards S.S men. Vladek has this type of reaction because since he experienced the rules under them, he knows the consequences. Vladek talked about the consequences of killing a German which often resulted in the death of 100 Jews. Therefore, it is logical for Vladek to feel uncomtrable with Artie sharing the S.S. story as an accomplishment rather than realizing the effect that it caused to others.
3. Vladek was able to survive the cattle car since he has a blanket hooked above everyone. This way Vladek was able to fed from the snow and make trading for snow with people below him.
4. Vladek's attitude towards Franciose is beyond rude since he didn't like the fact that she picked up a colored man and gave him a ride. Spiegleman includes this incident so that he shows that even though Vladek suffered from discrimination because of his religion and knows the struggles, and yet he is still racist to others.
5. What it tells us about the experience of Vladek during the Holocaust is that it was very traumatizing to him, mainly because he went through so much. Therefore, this inhibits him to be able to recall the Holocaust events rather meaningless activities that he did a day before.
6. Artie puts the picture of Vladek at the end of the book, to honor the author of the stories of the holocaust found in the book. If the picture was found int he beginning it would be meaningless to the reader since it is the first thing that they have encountered.
7. Spiegelman draws his parents' gravestone to dramatize the ending of the story and inform the reader that the characters of the original story were real people.

1. The tittle page of this chapter reveals that Vladek will be finally saved and will try to return to his normal life. The drawing demonstrates Vladek reflecting back on the times he used to wear the striped uniform.
2. First significant event is the amount of emphasis that Vladek makes to enable his son to move in with him since he feels extremely lonely. Second important event of the chapter is when Vladek realizes that the war is finally over. This is a major event since Vladek is able to think about all the things he is able to do now therefore everyone also celebrates. Third significant event is when Vladek and others encounter a Nazi which makes them panic and try to find somewhere to hide. Vladek realizes that people have not and will not change simply because the war is over, they will continue to treat Jews badly. Fourth event is the relationship that Vladek develops with the American soldiers, all of them seem to like him because he speaks the language and is willing to help. The fifth significant event is when Spiegelman shows all the memories of his father with little photographs.
3. Dogs are used to represent Americans because there is the saying that they are loyal to their owner which will translate to being loyal to their saving the Jews. Americans are also shown as dogs since it represents the standoff with cats that they are known for.
4. The symbolic meaning of scattering the pictures is because it demonstrates amount of stuff that Vladek has gone through.

1. The tittle page reveals the there is going to be some change of location that will highly impact the story. The airplane drawn shows that it new location will be somewhere with palm trees therefore the reader can predict that is Miami.
2. The first significant event is when Vladek is at the hospital because of this condition and this makes Artie realize the severity of this father's age and condition. The second event is when Vladek finds two girls from his home town this enables him to hope to find Anja since those girls survived. The third significant event is when they actually confirm that Anja was alive and now the only problem was to find her. Fourth important event is the reader is exposed to Vladek's real picture within the book. The picture is significant because Anja had it which helped her find Vladek. The fifth significant event is that Vladek sates that he is tired from all the story telling and the next thing presented to the audience is the gravestones of both Anja and Vladek. This is extremely significant since it provides the closing to the frame story of Vladek.
3. Vladek is not able to remember things from a day before but he can remember the Holocaust mainly because it was very traumatizing to him. The memories of the Holocaust are flashbulb memories therefore they are extremely present because of the impact that it had on him as a person.
4. Artie chooses to include the photograph at the end of the books to show the identity of the real Vladek as well as a way to show credibility for the stories enclosed in the book. The picture also serves meaning to the reader since it provides a visual of the actual protagonist of the story.
5. Spiegelman draws his parents gravestone the jewish symbol and separation between both of them. The fact that they are together is because Artie knows the amount of love between them is a lot. The presence of the jewish symbol is to represent the importance of their religion within their lifestyle.

The intriguing story about a survivor of the Holocaust is presented by the book, Maus by Art Spiegelman. The main character Vladek explains his struggles as well as his scarifies which enable him to survive the most difficult time of being a Jew. I really enjoyed the amount of dialogue that is enclosed within the book even though there was sometimes that the words seemed hard to understand. I rate this book 4 out of 5 mainly because of the amount of detail that was enclosed in the drawings and the comments.
