Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that was formed over millions of years from the remains of simple marine organisms. Crude oil is heated or boiled to a vapour state. Then piped to the fractionating column in the gaseous state where they condense at different heights in the column and hydrocarbons separate. The fractions at the top have the lowest boiling points, hence fractions at the bottom have the highest boiling point. This is called fractional distillation.

this process is called fractional distillation. the purpose of the industrial process is to separate out different fractions. crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules. in fractional distillation the crude oil is first entered into the pre-heater which boils the crude oil until evaporated in which it then enters the fractional column. As it rises in the column the gas starts to cool at various points the gas starts to condense into a liquid in which it is then extracted from the column. This works since different oils have different boiling points.

The method for the separation of different hydrocarbons and splits them up into different fuels is called fractional distillation. Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons of different lengths. Fractional distillation is when the crude oil is evaporates and then condenses into different columns. There are different boiling points for certain fuels for example. Fuel oil condenses at 350 degrees. As the crude oil cools the ones with higher boiling points will firstly condense then at various different points the liquid is removed and taken to a container/storage. The larger the molecule the higher its boiling point will be so the molecules will get smaller as you go up because they need less heat to break down.

Fractional distillation is the separation of a liquid mixture into fractions differing in boiling point. Crude oil is petroleum is it unrefined state. It is made up of hydrocarbons and other naturally occurring resources. To separate the crude oil, it is evaporated and then condensed at different temperatures in the fractionating Column.

The process that is taking place is fractional distillation of crude oil.
Crude oil are molecules of hydrocarbons of different lengths held together by intermolecular forces, which have to be broken for the hydrocarbon to melt or boil.

Crude oil is separated using fractional distillation
The process is as follows:
1. Oil is heated causing it to boil and turn into a gaseous mixture, and as the vapour rises in the fractioning column it cools.
2. As it cools, the chemicals with higher boiling points will be the first to start to condense.
3. At various points, the condensing liquid is extracted from the column.
4. The larger the molecule is, the higher it’s boiling point will be, so the extracted molecules get smaller as you go up the column.
