I believe one of the most important qualities a peer tutor must possess is patience. Often, students who request one-on-one teaching find themselves struggling to grasp new concepts, and will need their tutors to take as much time they need to make sure their students feel comfortable with the material. Reaching out for help is no easy thing to do, and rushing through classwork or becoming easily annoyed when tutoring someone will only discourage them further. I think that as long as you are patient and compassionate, and are willing to put in the effort to help your peers as thoroughly as you can, you will make a lovely peer tutor! :)

An important quality an effective peer tutor should possess is adaptability. Many students have different levels of knowledge on the subject being taught, and some learn better with a hands-on approach, while others with a more theoretical approach. The tutoring method should also depend on the kind of help the student needs; they might need to review the material, or apply these concepts in real life. All students’ learning paces are different, and the peer tutor should be able to identify their unique characteristics and adapt themselves to improve the student’s understanding.

I think effective peer tutors are resourceful. If you are unable to help a client properly, it is important that you know where to go to get the right help for them. For a lot of us, the internet is a great source (make sure you're using credible sites). Looking for good textbooks, online learning platforms, videos, and Quizlets is an example of how we can find materials that match our clients learning needs. Consulting different places and people is important so that we can be resourceful and do our best to help our clients.

Peer tutors should be able to have empathy for students who are struggling and might be struggling with confidence and might feel a bit defeated while working on their homework. I think we can all know how it feels to be stuck on a question and to be frustrated because we don't know the answer. It's important to understand how that feels and apply it to helping out the students because we want them to have confidence that their work is good and be proud of how hard they worked on it .

As a tutor, keeping an open mind towards your own capabilities and your client's capabilities are equally important. Recognizing and accepting that you might not have the right skills to help somebody IS the first step in helping them in said situation. Although you might feel inclined to stick to tutoring your favourite subjects, being willing to branch out and try tutoring other subjects can end up helping you solidify your skill set in that area. Not everybody learns the same and learning to accommodate rather than bending everything to the way you've been previously taught can be beneficial to both you and your client, you might even discover a new learning method from them! While our clients learn from us, there is tons for us to learn from them too! Being open minded about using your fellow tutors as resources will prove to be a huge asset, we should support each other too, not just our clients.

Sasha Lam
I strongly believe that this is a needed trait for a peer tutor because if you are having trouble with the learning process, you need to set a good example on how to be a good lifelong learner. As a peer tutor you are also a role model. You need to show your peers what you need to do in order to be successful as a learner. If you have no determination and give up whenever something gets hard you will never improve as a person. This also applies academically. School will be frustrating at times so you need to show that an honest expression of emotions and determination will get you through.

I'd say an important factor in becoming a good and effective peer tutor is simply being a friendly and supportive person. It can be frustrating and belittling for students who are struggling in a subject area to see others of their age (including peer tutors) succeeding in said subject. However, when someone is supportive, friendly and can work through a problem with the student so that they arrive at the answer together, it will feel much better for the student. I find that if a peer tutor figures out everything on their own and teaches it afterwards, it can make things worse for the student, as this can add to that feeling of hopelessness and unconfidence if they were having lots of trouble on the same thing.

I think that the ability to be "down to earth" with a person that you are tutoring is very important as they may be quite stressed to ask for help for the first time from a higher grade high schooler. If you can also put yourself in their shoes and try your best to be supportive because most certainly they might not be having the best time with their courses that will go a long way as they will now know that someone is it their corner and able to help them whenever necessary! This helped me a lot in Grade 9, as I was struggling in my classes and I didn't want to ask for help because I though that I could do it by myself (I was wrong, lol) and when I got tutored for the first time I was able to learn so much because they were incredibly supportive and although I did not have a good grade overall in that class, I was able to learn lots of good study habits and time management skills that still help me to this day!

-Kieran B.

I feel as though the most effective tutor is calm and patient with their clients/students. Some students do tend to get frustrated with their school work, and I think that every peer tutor needs to understand everyone's works and comprehends the material at a different pace. Patience is a key quality in tutoring as we need to ensure that our students clearly understand every subject and have master every skill we teach, review or cover.

Being understanding and patient

I believe having patience and being understanding are key virtues to being a peer tutor. To try and relate to a student and understand their needs will allow a tutor to help them to the fullest. A tutor must understand how the process of learning varies from student-to-student and how patience is often required. Knowing that different students have different methods of learning and require different lengths of time will help give tutors an idea of the appropriate amount of time a specific student might need to be able to understand a concept. Understanding that students may have different learning levels and require more time to grasp a new concept is important. Tutors may need to be mindful of the speed in which they teach, as it may be too quick for some students. Most tutors may not require much time to learn a new concept but some students may require longer periods of time to comprehend something and might need to review content several times before they are able to fully understand it. Keeping in mind of the different conditions and learning requirements of students, and having patience will help a tutor be more efficient.
-Tenzin Nyidon

Dissevering Information and Pacing

When tutoring someone who doesn't understand a specific idea or portion of a class it can be easy to flood them with information. In some cases, especially when there's only one easy to communicate idea, this method can be effective, but in other cases this method will achieve nothing past flooding the tutee with more information than they can process. In these times it's important to do two things, dissever the information, and pace yourself. Keep in mind that no one can understand everything at once. Break the information up into smaller, independently understandable pieces of information, and communicate these one-by-one. Secondly, slow down. Wait until your tutee understands the first concept before moving on to the next piece. Missing an important idea can leave the entire problem both daunting and incomprehensible. The usage of these two ideas, pacing and information dissevering, are essential traits of a good tutor.

zev

Being passionate while tutoring a client is important and makes whoever your tutoring feel better about needing a tutor. If you go in seeming uninterested they will be less willing to work and learn but when you're excited and passionate about the subject that can really rub off on them. They will feel like less of a burden and more like a delight. Passion and excitement can also make the client more likely to work with you again or another tutor. Passion is also important for the subject you're working on, it can really inspire the client and get them more interested/find joy in that subject.

I think that a tutor should be able to recognize what it's like to be a student who could lack confidence, feel anxious or overwhelmed, or who simply doesn't grasp the material. Can tell when students can't comprehend a certain way or method of teaching and tries a different method of teaching the information. And makes effort to motivate their client who might already be dreading the subject they can't comprehend.
