Yemen Coastline, near Jirdan

Perhaps I should have stayed in Mecca, but at least we made it to Yemen. We basically took the smallest ship known to man, and somehow, we survived the coral reefs, storms, and pirates on this rinky dink dhow boat. A lot of the passengers got sick. I think it was the strong winds and just being on this sad excuse for a boat. We made it to land, and I was able to ride a camel. 10/10 would do again. The coastal cities and mountains in Yemen are nice. Hopefully this trip will get better, but let's be honest anything is better than how it started.

This coastal city is pretty nice. Apparently it's like the entrance to the Red Sea, so that's cool. A lot of ships come and go. All of them look better than the dhow we were on. (I'll never get over it.) People have to pay a tariff on the goods they bring. Imagine being able to charge people just for passing through a place? Easy money, I say. Speaking of what people say... They say this place is on top of an extinct volcano... What if it erupts? That would be a story to tell. But back to the goods here. Ships bring a lot of stuff. I've seen spices, medicines, dyes, you name it. I'm really interested in the Indian silks and the ivory. I bet those cost a fortune. I'm not sure how long I'll stay here, but I bet there's even better places to explore.

I don't know what's worse... the dhow or this smelly place! Thankfully, the weather helped us have an okay trip. The winds were in our favor, and they helped us sail south to East Africa faster than I thought. I heard that we'll get to see ivory, animal skins, and things to make perfume. It sounds like there's a lot of goods in this place. But everyone forgot to tell me that this place reeks of fish! I don't even want to talk about what they do to the camels. I'm thinking I'm going to sleep on the boat. The smells here are so bad, I don't think I can be on land for more than a few hours. This trip feels like one thing after another.
