When the German forces entered neutral Belgium and France in August 14 they had a cultural and institutional fear of snipers (franc-tireurs), like in 1870. They were afraid of guerrilla fighters dressed like civilians. They engaged in brutal acts as a result of this fear and in an attempt to cow the population. The British propaganda used the « Rape of Belgium » to enlist more men. Often the atrocities have been exaggerated like the stories about the children’s cut hands and raped girls. Most of the massacres of civilians and burning down of villages and cities (like in the background of the poster) were true though: some members of my family (on my grandmother’s side) were killed in the Tintigny massacre. I visited their gravestone when I was a little girl and was very impressed by the tales.
