We started our first class with the opportunity to introduce ourselves, followed by an exercise in group interaction and reflection, where we needed to debate and organize answers on various questions regarding our speech and pronunciation in English and how the social influences them. We watched a very interesting TED Talks about an educator who comments on how empathy and charisma in the student-teacher relationship are very important for the healthy development and learning, especially of children and adolescents.

In this class, we studied the text "Por um ensino intercultural de Inglês como língua franca", where each group of students received a part and wrote a summary for reading in the classroom. The teacher also clarified the topic by providing information on how the teaching of English as a lingua franca helps to make room for other cultures in terms of language. There was also a debate about the duration of classes and activity deadlines, which was very healthy and a better balance was found for both sides.

Today we learn about the changes that will take place in English for Elementary School with the approval of the BNCC. The BNCC seeks out an old concept of language as a social practice and presents new concepts such as English as a lingua franca. Although the BNCC uses ELF terminology, the BNCC follows the "World English" vision. Some BNCC concepts are the same as ELF but others are not. According to Gimenez's text, changes to the BNCC will depend a lot on the government and the educational system.

In articulatory phonetic, we studied how sound is produced in different parts of the mouth and throat and the respective classification of these sounds into consonants and vowels. Consonants are classified by the vibration of the vocal cords and the mode and location of articulation. Vowels are classified according to the position of the lips and tongue along with the tension of the articulators. The consonants in English are similar to those in Brazilian Portuguese, with two dental fricatives being the only difference. However, as they are not common sounds in Portuguese, they become a hindrance in learning the English language. But we have learned that even without pronouncing these sounds, it is possible for a person to acquire proficiency and have complete intelligibility in their speech. Particularly, this was the most difficult part of the subject and I found great difficulties in connecting sounds to symbols, much of my difficulty in the subject came from this part.

We started studying the ted talk genre in this class. We learn about speech, mostly. We watched a ted talk in which Salman Khan talks about the creation of Khan Academy, a technology that helps the learning process and greatly facilitates the student-teacher connection. We learned a lot from this ted talk, various techniques and ways of presenting ours.

I worked that day so unfortunately I missed the class, I received guidance on the content from colleagues, but not enough to formulate an opinion on the content. We studied facts and myths about pronunciation. And about how important stress is for communication. We also learned about the use of intonation in speech. All of this can be used and directed to our TED talk.

We learned that the beginning of TED talk is when we have the audience's full attention and we should make good use of that, asking questions, even if they are rhetorical questions, and telling personal stories to engage the audience with the content we will be working on. After that, it is also very important to know how to develop the content and follow what was introduced naturally.

At the conclusion of the ted talk, we need to summarize the speech and make a good closing of what was said. The beginning and conclusion of a TED talk is where we get the most attention from the audience, so signaling the audience that the presentation is at its conclusion is important so that the audience is not surprised by the sudden end. All parts of the speech need to flow naturally from one to the other during the presentation, guiding the audience in the direction you want them to think about.
