by Michelle Cook
Non Fiction
Read Sept 4
This book is based off of a saying that became really popular during the 2008 presidential election. The saying was about previous African Americans that did what they did for the purpose of future African Americans to be able to continue to make positive changes.
I really liked this book because at the end it gave more information about each important person mentioned in the story.
This book would be interesting to children that wanted to learn about some important people in African American history.
I could use this book to introduce different pioneers of change during different lessons.

by David A. Adler
Non Fiction
Read Sept 4
This book is about Jackie Robinson, the first African American baseball player in the major leagues. He was gifted in many sports in high school such as baseball, football, basketball, and track and field. After college, he spent some time playing football, in the military, and playing for a minor league African American baseball team, until a baseball manager in the major leagues saw him and to hired him to make a difference in major league baseball.
I like this book because it starts by talking about his mother and father. From the way that his parents raised him, you can see why he was so resilient and courageous.
This book is interesting to kids who like sports and are interested in history.
I could use this book to teach about perseverance. Just like Robinson never gave up on his dreams, I would teach my kids not to give up on theirs (narrative writing lesson).
