Colombia's meteorological agency IDEAM has issued its highest alert for flooding after heavy rainfall and persistent storms are affecting large areas of the country. Even though the wet winter, known as invierno, usually hits hardest in April, most of Colombia has been bearing the brunt of very wet weather, especially the Andean interior.

The agency decided to raise its warning to a "red alert" after the pre-season rainfall has been heavier than expected, and a preventive measure for towns located along the flood plains of the Cauca and Magdalena rivers.

According to IDEAM, 28% of the country is at risk of flooding if the heavy rains of the El Niño weather phenomenon impact Colombia after causing widespread destruction across neighboring Perú.

While Perú tries to come to terms with the worst flooding in decades and that has resulted in tens of thousands homeless and 70 killed, the Colombian government is putting emergency measures into place in the eventuality that El Niño, in the upcoming weeks, drops more than its expected rainfall.

The departments most at risk are Valle, Atlantico, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Antioquia, Cordoba, Cesar, Cauca and Meta. Three major cities - Bogotá. Cali and Barranquilla - have also been included in the red alert given their proximity to rivers that in the past are prone to breaking their banks, causing flooding to nearby towns. The IDEAM predicts April could be one of the wettest on record, potentially damping holiday plans for millions traveling during Holy Week.

A Chinese court has ruled in favor of Apple in design patent disputes the Cupertino, California company and a domestic phone-marker, overturning a ban on selling iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones in China.

Last May, a Beijing patent regulator ordered Apple's Chinese subsidiary and a local retailer Zoomflight to stop selling the iPhones after Shenzhen Baili Marketing Services lodged a complaint claiming that the patent for the design of its mobile phone 100c was being infridged by the iPhone sales.

Apple and Zoomflight took the Beijing Intellectual Property Office's ban to court. The Beijing Intellectual Property Court on Friday revoked the ban saying Apple and Zoomflight did not violate Shenzhen Baili's design patent for 100c phones. The court ruled that the regulator did not follow due procedures in ordering the ban while there was no sufficient proof to claim the designs constituted a violation of intellectual property rights.

Representatives of Beijing Intellectual Property Office and Shenzhen Baili said they would take time to decide whether to appeal the ruling. In a related ruling the same court denied a request by Apple to demand stripping Shenzhen Baili of its design patent for 100c phones.

Apple first filed the request to the Patent Reexamination Board of State Intellectual Property Office. The board rejected the request, but Apple lodged a lawsuit against the rejection. The Beijing Intellectual Property Court on Friday ruled to maintain the board's decision. It is unclear if Apple will appeal.

At least 58 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town in north-western Syria, a monitoring group says.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that strikes on Khan Sheikhoun by Syrian government or Russian jets had caused many people to choke. Later, aircraft fired rockets at local clinics treating survivors, medics and activists said.

A Syrian military source denied the government had used any such weapons. Russia's defence ministry meanwhile insisted it had not carried out any air strikes in the vicinity. If confirmed, it would be one of the deadliest chemical attacks in Syria's civil war.

What happened?

The warplanes are reported to have attacked Khan Sheikhoun, about 50km (30 miles) south of the city of Idlib, early on Tuesday, when many people were asleep. Hussein Kayal, a photographer for the pro-opposition Edlib Media Center (EMC), told the Associated Press that he was awoken by the sound of an explosion at about 06:30 (03:30 GMT).

When he reached the scene, there was no smell, he said. He found people lying on the floor, unable to move and with constricted pupils, he added. Mohammed Rasoul, the head of a charity ambulance service in Idlib, told the BBC that his medics had found people, many of them children, choking in the street.

The Syrian Observatory (SOHR) quoted medics as saying that they had been treating people with symptoms including fainting, vomiting and foaming at the mouth. An AFP news agency journalist saw a young girl, a woman and two elderly people dead at a hospital, all with foam still visible around their mouths. The journalist also reported that the same facility was hit by a rocket on Tuesday afternoon, bringing down rubble on top of doctors treating the injured. The source of the projectile was not clear, but the EMC and the opposition Local Co-ordination Committees network said warplanes had targeted several clinics.

How many victims are there?

The SOHR put the death toll at 58, including 11 children, but Mr Rasoul reported that 67 people had been killed and that 300 were injured. The pro-opposition Step news agency meanwhile said 100 had died. The EMC said it had stopped counting the victims because there were so many. It posted photos showing what appeared to be at least seven dead children in the back of a pick-up truck. There were no visible traumatic injuries on their bodies.

What substance was used?

The SOHR said it was unable to say what exactly was dropped. However, the EMC and LCC said it was believed to be the nerve agent Sarin, which is highly toxic and considered 20 times as deadly as cyanide.

Sarin inhibits the action of an enzyme, which deactivates signals that cause human nerve cells to fire. This blockage pushes nerves into a continual "on" state. The heart and other muscles - including those involved in breathing - spasm. Sufficient exposure can lead to death via asphyxiation within minutes. Sarin is almost impossible to detect because it is a clear, colourless and tasteless liquid that has no odour in its purest form.

Has Sarin been used in Syria before?

The government was accused by Western powers of firing rockets filled with Sarin at several rebel-held suburbs of the capital Damascus in August 2013, killing hundreds of people. President Bashar al-Assad denied the charge, blaming rebel fighters, but he did subsequently agree to destroy Syria's chemical arsenal.

Despite that, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has continued to document the use of toxic chemicals in attacks in Syria. In January 2016, it said blood samples taken from the victims of one unspecified attack showed victims had been exposed to Sarin or a Sarin-like substance.

What about other chemical agents?

A joint investigation with the UN concluded in October that government forces had used chlorine as a weapon at least three times between 2014 and 2015. It also found Islamic State militants had used the blister agent sulphur mustard. Human Rights Watch also recently accused government helicopters of dropping bombs containing chlorine on rebel-held areas of Aleppo on at least eight occasions between 17 November and 13 December, during the final stages of the battle for the city.

And last week, two suspected chemical attacks were reported in Hama province, in a rebel-held area not far from Khan Sheikhoun.

What has been the reaction to Tuesday's attack?

Idlib province, where the air strikes took place, is almost entirely controlled by a rebel alliance and the al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The region, home to 900,000 displaced people, is regularly targeted by the government and its ally Russia, as well as the US-led coalition against IS.

There was no immediate comment from the government, but a Syrian military source told Reuters news agency that it "does not and has not" used chemical weapons. The opposition National Coalition accused the government of being behind what it called a "horrible crime", and called on the UN Security Council to open an immediate investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable.

France, which backs the opposition, agreed that a "particularly serious chemical attack" had taken place and called for an emergency Security Council meeting.

How easy is it to make a living as a model

Recently the lid has been lifted on an industry that already has a reputation for being tough on vulnerable young women.
Not only was it announced that five of the UK's top modelling agencies are being investigated for fixing prices but one of those agencies, FM London, has gone into liquidation with dozens of models potentially affected.

That's unlikely to break the stride of the industry's most high-profile models, the Cara Delevingnes and Kate Mosses of this world.

But there are thousands of young women and men working in the industry with a much lower profile and income. And questions are being raised over how well these jobbing models are being treated by the agencies who are supposed to represent their best interests.

We asked three London-based models what it is like trying to make a living in the industry.

"Lauren" is 24 and has been modelling for five years. She doesn't want to give her real name as she fears her agency would offer her less work if she speaks out. She says pay rates have fallen in recent years.

All the first jobs I did were free. When you do a commercial job for a High Street brand or a big ad campaign they pay money, but editorials - everything you see in industry magazines - you don't get paid for those at all. It's an unwritten rule in the industry that you have to do them to get your profile up.

You've got quite a lot of girls who can't afford to live and are going to the agencies to ask for advances on money and are getting into debt. The bookers laugh at them for asking for handouts.

They try to discourage you from collecting your money and put you off asking for it.

When you get your money it comes with a statement and there are always unforeseen charges on the statement. It's never set out what they're charging you for and the more you've earned the more weird charges there are on your account.

Agencies pick and choose. If they don't like you that week then they won't put you forward for the job. I've been in the agency when they've actually said not to put certain girls in certain packages because the girls have been annoying them or they've been asking for money.

Some agencies are really good, they pay their girls every Friday, but in my agency we have to message our accountant every month to find out if any money has come in. Half the time they lie to us and say the money hasn't come in even if the client has told us they've already paid the invoice.

It's quite sad because when you join an agency you like to think it's like a family, but they're out to make a profit. You have to bear that in mind and not get sucked into the idea that they have your best interests at heart. They don't when it comes down to it.

"Pippa" started modelling when she was 14 and living abroad. She went back to it aged 18 and back living in the UK, to help pay for her degree. She says the first agency she worked for treated her very badly.

Modelling is a really horrific industry to work in if you don't have anything else going for you. There's constant pressure over weight control: it's a form of control and grooming. I was 5'11" and size 8-10 and they told me I had to lose 3cm off my hips. They phoned me up every day and asked me what I had eaten that day. I'd go in for a chat and they'd measure me and say you need to lose this much more weight.

They said I had to get a personal trainer, which was £100 for four sessions, and made me dye my hair. They said I had to go to the hairdresser they picked and it was £400. After three months they said, you've just got to lose two more centimetres [off your hips] and you can be on our main board in Paris.

They'd send me out for test shoots to men's apartments on my own and it was really unsafe. One time the man was really weird and kept trying to make me take my clothes off.

There was a casting for a lingerie company. My agent said, you have to do it. I said, I don't want to do that because if I'm on an ad spanking someone I won't get a professional job outside modelling. They pressured me. So I quit.

I was eight months with that agency and I didn't make any money."Pippa" says she worked for two further agencies where she wasn't happy, and earned around £10,000 a year. But she is now with an agency she is very happy with and is earning £800 a day and getting regular work.

Rebecca Pearson is happy to give her real name because her experiences have been mostly positive, although earlier in her career she also encountered late payment. She has been modelling for more than a decade.

It can be a harsh industry full of rejection. But I'm really glad I modelled. It gave me a lot of confidence. It bought me a flat and put me through university. But I'm glad I started when I did.

There were so many more clients, there was so much more money in advertising. The fees you could get for a commercial were huge.

I don't think regular working models now are getting the opportunities I had at that stage. I did campaigns for most of the shops on the High Street but now it's celebrities who do the High Street campaigns and magazine covers that we used to get.

I did a big campaign for New Look and was in all of their shops. It must have totalled around £35,000 over about seven years. Now I'd say most regular models are getting paid less and less for more and more work.

You're expected to do longer hours and do the whole social media thing. If you have fewer than 10,000 followers on Instagram you'll lose the job to someone with more followers, as they can give the brand a broader advertising reach.

There are so many new agencies and so many more models than there used to be, many agencies get undercut by smaller ones and there's always someone who'll do it for less.

There is a groundswell of people speaking up from within the industry. People have been reluctant to before because they didn't want to be seen as a moaner, it can lose you work.

And as for those outside the industry, they say, ugh, she's being a princess. They assume we're all Linda Evangelistas not getting out of bed for less than $10,000, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

The average is probably around £20,000 to £30,000 per annum. We're not moaning, we're just calling for regulation in certain areas, especially because many models are so young.

No-one from the industry's trade body, the Association for Modelling Agencies, was available for comment, but the code of practice on its website says that agents should manage each model's career to the maximum potential and safeguard the health and well-being of the models they represent.

Suspect in Russia metro bombing traveled to Turkey, say co-workers

The man Russian police believe was the suicide bomber who killed 14 people in a blast on the St Petersburg metro this week developed an interest in Islam and soon after traveled to Turkey, two people who know him told Reuters.

The two people said they did not know for sure if the man, Akbarzhon Jalilov, went on from Turkey to neighboring Syria. Turkey has been routinely used by radical Islamists as a route into areas of Syria controlled by the Islamic State group. If Jalilov had been in Syria, that would expose a major gap in Russia's counter-terrorism procedures, which rely heavily on identifying anyone who has been with militants in Syria and stopping them from returning to Russia, or arresting them.

The metro blast happened on Monday afternoon just as Russian President Vladimir Putin visited St Petersburg. No group has claimed responsibility. But Islamic State has threatened acts of violence on Russian soil in reprisal for the Kremlin's military intervention in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Jalilov, the suspected suicide bomber, was born in 1995 and grew up in the city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim ex-Soviet Republic in Central Asia. Around 2011 he moved to St Petersburg. He worked in low-paid jobs for several years. Photographs posted on social media showed a stylishly dressed young man. His online posts offered no hint of any ties to Islamist militants. But there is a gap in Jalilov's biography from the end of 2015 until the start of this year. During that period several acquaintances said he disappeared from view.

He reappeared when he visited Osh in February this year. In March he returned to St Petersburg and rented an apartment from where he set off on the day of the bombing carrying a rucksack and a bag. By speaking to several people who knew Jalilov well, Reuters has been able to piece together a picture of his life in the missing years.

Google begins showing Pinterest-like shoppable photos in image search.

In some instances, tapping on an image result will now pull up a shoppable list of products featured inside the photo. So if, for example, you’re looking at a picture of a model wearing sunglasses and holding a handbag, Google may be able to display links to buy the bag and glasses, or at least a pair that’s similar to them. I thing that it’s a good service.

There are a bunch of constraints about this, but the implication is that this will eventually expand in a big way. At the moment, the shopping suggestions will appear in mobile searches and inside the Android search app. And they’re only supported for a few categories of products: handbags, sunglasses, and shoes.

Other clothing will be added in “the next few months,” as will home and garden products. Google says the feature relies on machine vision to analyze the products and pick out similar items. But it’s not clear how much that’s a factor, because the feature also depends in a big way on web developers, who need to specifically add metadata to a site before its images can offer up these suggestions.

Either way, the addition makes plenty of sense. Google says “price and availability information” was a top request from image search users. And the addition starts to make image search seem a lot more like Pinterest — which itself is often an image search tool with attached shopping information. In much the same way, this opens the door for Google to bring in more revenue.

Google plans to expand the feature to more platforms later this year.

Strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Otto could become a hurricane in a couple of days.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the centre. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Interests in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the islands of San Andres and Providencia should monitor the progress of Otto. A tropical storm watch may be required for San Andres on Monday night or early Tuesday.

Outer rain bands from Otto are expected to produce rainfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches across portions of central and western Panama and southeastern Costa Rica through Wednesday, with isolated totals upwards of 10 to 15 inches across the higher terrain.
