Sailing against the wind refers to the boat moving forward in an angle towards the wind to find out if there were islands on the exposed side of there homeland.
When voyagers found new islands they could safely sail across the wind as they know that they could stop at these islands if necessary or when they cannot make it all the way back home.
Sailing downwind usually meant returning by a different route.
