NEW THIS AUTUMN 2019: 3D Lab Guest Sessions

This term Ash in the 3D Lab created a new opportunity to exhibit and explore the intersection between making, pedagogy and production. Introducing '3D Lab Guest Sessions.'

Everyday, 3D Lab technicians facilitate the process of making through thinking and thinking through making here in the Lab. Our Guest Sessions are an opportunity to make visible the far reaching connections we make in the 3D Lab by inviting either internal or external practitioners to collaborate with the 3D Lab to produce a learning event. Each session is 3 hours long, open to students across programmes and is run on a sign up basis.

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome our own Will Waterhouse to lead our very first session this term. Will helped students and staff explore composition, structure, tension, balance and movement. Ultimately it was a joyful 3D Lab Guest Session playing with the often surprising results of demolishing carefully constructed 3D drawings.

"Every motion of the hand in every one of its works carries itself through the element of thinking, every bearing of the hand bears itself in that element. All the work of the hand is rooted in thinking." - Martin Heidegger

The 3D Lab is working closely with Clare Mitten in the Wimbledon Space on a potential Spring 3D Lab Guest Session.

It has been an absolute joy to be in discussion with Chris and Ewan, aka Forster & Heighes in how a 3D Lab Guest Session could provide a key platform for them in the intersection between learning, making, thinking, process, production and performance in developing their residency here at Wimbledon in February.

Chris and Ewan are fast becoming kindred makers and friends of the 3D Lab team and we look forward to collaborating with them. We are certainly eagerly looking forward to their residency to see what emerges!

Costume's Personification Headpiece Project

Nick and Ash inducted 80 1st year Costume students in the 3D Lab so that they can access the 3D Lab whilst based at Wimbledon. The health & safety induction included a particular focus of looking at forming and joining plastics to get them up and running for their headpiece project.

Alex and Ash co-taught with Rebecca and Glenda in Costume, running tutorials in the 3D Lab, consulting students on their head piece ideas and signposting them to processes, materials and techniques they could experiment with and begin making their work. The tech team over in Metal covered soldering and construction techniques providing students with the resources they needed to get the project done.

Some brilliant work came out of the project. Many thanks to the Costume team for including the 3D Lab in developing their project so that we could plan in some pivotal technical learning activities for the 1st year Costume students.
