Paternally, I am Eastern Band Cherokee. My great, great grandparents walked the Trail of Tears. I was fortunate to hear our historical stories from my grandmother and grand aunts. Maternally, I am mostly European. Again, I was fortunate to know my great, great grandmother Isabel Mealing who was very proud the our ancestors signed the Magna Carta. Izzy is one of my greatest heros. At 101, she emailed me weekly to make sure I was working hard on my dissertation.
