     그는 ‘마들렌’ 이라는 이름으로 미리엘 주교가 자신에게 베풀었던 것처럼 가난한 사람들과 불쌍한 사람들을 도우며 살아간다. 하지만 마들렌이라는 이름으로 살아가면서 장발장은 주변에 있던 모든 사람들에게 그가 범죄자라는 사실을 숨기고 살아왔다.
     이러한 장발장의 과거를 아는 자베르는 장발장을 고발해 다시 투옥하겠다며 협박한다.
