1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature to learn more about the work and about ourselves. I feel like studying TTTC has opened my eyes and taught me so much about the past.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We can be affected by texts if they have a lot of pathos in them, which can certainly affect our emotions. There was definitely a lot of pathos throughout TTTC which defiantly impacted the audience.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?

The fact that most of the story is exaggerated and all of it is fiction affects the meaning in the way that the story is not literal, but was created to shed light and meaning on the war.

It reflects the African American community because we get to see more into how they felt during this time period and the things that they had to endure.

The stream if consciousness helps the reader understand how the characters were thinking at this time.

Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.

All of this history was so important because the story was written in the past, so the way that the community was at this time had to line up with historical events.

This is worse than when Paul D came to 124 and she cried

2 Helplessly into the stove. This is worse. Then it was for herself.

3 Now she's crying because she has no self. death is a

4 Skipped meals compared to this. She can feel her thickness

5 thinning, dissolving into nothing. She grabs for the hair at her

6 temples to get enough to uproot it and halt the melting

7 for a while. Teeth clamped shut, Denver breaks her sobs. She

8 doesn't move to open the door because there is no world out

9 there. She decides to stay in the cold house and let the dark

10 Swallow her like the minnows of light above. She won't put up

11 with another leaving, another trick. Waking up to find one

12 brother and then another not at the bottom of the bed, his foot

13 jabbing at her spine. Sitting at the table eating turnips and sav-

14 oring the liquor for her grandmother to drink; Her mother's

15 hand on the keeping room door and her voice saying, “Baby

16 Suggs is gone, Denver.” And when she got around to worry-

17 ing what would be the case if Sethe died or Paul D took

18 her away, a dream-come-true comes true just to leave her on a

19 piles of newspapers in the dark.

20 No footfall announces her, but there she is, standing where

21 Before there was nobody when Denver looked. And smiling.

22 Denver grabs the ham of Beloved’s skirt. “I thought you

23 left me. I thought you went back”

24 Beloved smiles, “I don't want that place. This is the place I

25 Am” She sits down on the pallet and, laughing, lies back

26 Looking at the cracklights above.

27 Surreptitiously, Denver pinches a piece of beloved’s skirt

28 Between her fingers and hold on. A good thing she does be-

29 Cause suddenly Beloved sits up.

30 “What is it?” asks Denver.

31“Look,” she points to the sunlit cracks.

32 “What? I don’t see anything.” Denver follows the pointing finger.

33 Beloved drops her hand. “I'm like this.”

34 Denver watches as Beloved bends over, curls up and rocks.

35 Her eyes go to no place; her moaning is so small Denver can

36 hardly hear it.

37“You all right? Beloved?”

38 Beloved focuses her eyes. “Over there. Her face.”

39 Denver looks where beloved's eyes go; there is nothing but

40 darkness there.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

This novel specifically addresses the issues of gender, through paul ds and his loss of masculinity. There are many instances of power, such as when the rooster had more power and rights than paul d. the style of the novel supports that because of morrisons type of writing. She continues to write with ambiguity and with so many rhetorical devices.
