The aim of the message was to claim that Phillip Scheidemann was stabbing the German army in the back, by starting a revolution. It also suggests that Matthias Erzberger was supporting him, because he was signing the armistice between Germany and the allied powers and stopping the "primordial catastrophe of the twentieth century". The soldiers you can see in the trench were suffering, because they could not fulfill their duty, how Paul von Hindenburg said. Paul von Hindenburg also said that the naval mutiny in Kiel was a big problem, because it was one of the most important reason because of which the war ended. Furthermore the picture criticizes all the people that were in favor of a democracy. In this cartoon he is stabbing the German soldiers. On his left you can see Matthias Erzberger, who signed the armistice. The two men sitting on money bags are jews. The jews were accused to make profit of the end of the war. Because the American army reached France, General Ludendorff asked his government to ask the Allies for an armistice before the fighting reached Germany. Germany wasn’t in good condition, an epidemic of influenza added to the problems of the starving German people. Since a lot of sailors didn’t believe to win against the british army anymore, a naval mutiny began.

The cartoon is drawn from the perspective of the people who didn’t share the opinion that Germany should become a democracy. 
Those that thought  Scheidemann would weaken Germany due to the revolution. The soldiers who were about to win got “stabbed in the back” by the start of the revolution, they lost everything they fought for. The decision to make Germany  democratic demoralised the soldiers  .
Matthias Erzberger which was the representative of the Reich signed the armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers. This meant the capitulation of Germany.  Some people thought that this will make Germany inferior.

Whilst the german soldiers were fighting in a brutal war, protecting their country, the  Reich leadership betrayed them as well as the population with their decision to sign the armistice. The people in the background represents the jewish population which in the eyes of the cartoonist don’t help Germany winning the war either.

Or more specifically does not show the truth. Because Von Hindenburg needed someone to put the blame on, for loosing the war. They didn’t want to put the blame on the German army, because they wanted to keep that image, of them being the best. As well people were frustrated, because many people died and they fought for a long time. Soldiers and people at home were going through hell. So they made up the stab-in-the-back-myth, to not blame the German army. And it is much easier to blame someone else for problems, than to look at yourself and start there finding problems. That is why many people startet to belobe the myth. Possible consequences are that even more people would mistrust and be unhappy with the reich government. That would lead to  them not getting supported by the population. Apart from that Bulgaria and Turkey asked for peace and the Austria-Hungarian Empire was falling apart.A lot of German people were starving, or had medical problems and many Berliners died a day. That’s why Germany couldn’t win the war and the stab-in-the-back-myth is false. After the stab-in-the-back-myth the people were very frustrated and angry because they fought for a very long time and many people died but they got nothing out of it. That’s why many people started believing in the myth.
