The picture indicates that we will suffer the consequences if we continue to pollute the environment. The image shows factories and industrial waste on one’s tongue, which is very visually appealing and shocking when you look at it and think about its meaning. The mouth looks very vivid, almost like the person is swallowing all this poisonous pollution, which indicates the theme that the pollution humans produce will eventually come back to us one way or another.

Size: A2
Medium: collage
Materials used in this collage includes:
Online images (the black and white Marilyn Monroe and "Psycho" scene)
Drawings of the infected lungs, mouth)
Dry flowers
The theme of the collage is about the damage of passive smoking, primarily to the lungs. This is shown by the infected lungs with smoke coming out of the trachea, which implies the poisonous gases that goes into the lungs has exceeded its capacity of air and therefore overflows out backwards. The smoke that comes out emerges into the shape of a skeleton which is seen by the women, which is a well-known character from the movie the movie "psycho". This scene implies that smoke is dangerous to people who are exposed to it as it is compared to "a killer" (extended meaning from what happened next in that famous scene in the movie). If watching closely the lungs is combined with the figure of Marilyn Monroe, the upper body of her is being cut down. The meaning of this is link to the whole picture, as on the left we can see that she's the one smoking. The upper body of her is cut down in the image, implying that inside her perfect body, her lungs are damaged just like the emphasized and exaggerated lungs. (Hint: this idea is in effect inspired by the fifth picture that you can see on my padlet). Also, the hot smoke is linked with her figure in a humorous way (well maybe not).
Another anatomy shown in the photo is Marilyn Monroe's mouth, whose size has clearly been exaggerated in response to the surrealism feeling. The usual color of the mouth suggests it's stained because of the smoking. And finally, the flowers wilts and rots because of the smoke, the symbol of flower also links to Marilyn Monroe and implies how she, and other people's health are damaged by the smoke just like the flowers are.

(The picture uploaded look a bit different in terms of the actual color so please excuse :)) I use pencil to sketch out the lines and shapes, and then started using water color for painting. I started off with the large chunck of colors, such as the table clocks at the very front, the walls and the sky & sea. Generally I put on a layer of very light, foundemental color first, then added more and more layers to show the texture. Some spots i left with a brighter color in response to the contrast between light and shadow. Then I worked on the details, like the objects, the waves and the patterns on the table cloth. I like how the paintings does look similiar to the original work in general, but some details were not very delicatelt-done, and there are some painting skills I need to work on :).

I started off brainstorming ideas using my dream diary. After studying Surrealist artists like Dali and Frida, I started to realized that, despite the "above and beyond reality" nature of surrealist arts, they reflect the historical & social context and mirrors the emotions and inner voices of the artist. So just like the first summative work, I decided to make the final piece a combination of both my mental space and society and ideally discover a link between them.
Elements:
Drowning water--creates a sense of suffocation-symbolizes oppression (depressing news, norms)
Also, drawing water and reflecting on possible improvements on skills last time might be very helpful :)

Dreams:
Romance: a loving couple-spills on their face(pour paint)--again, translating to the theme that even where it seems many people in the society are abandoning care and love for people and hatred in the society increases, there's always love & hope (demonstrated by the beautiful color paint).

When the person jumps out-light-hope

Society-
Gunshots( bullet shot out then sank)
--people=fish---ecosystem
Glacier/icebergs--the potential danger that lies under the surface society, global warming

Message: even in a society where everything seems to get blurry and hopes seem far away, there's always a silver lining and a way out.

There's a pool, locked by a giant key that controls water flowing in and out. Under the sea, there are objects that represent all different social issues. For example, a gun is clearly a representation of issues like gun control and violence. However, when a bullet is shot out from the gun in the water, it sinks down to the bottom and immediately can’t cause damage anymore. And that's what almost every object stands for, that even in a time where our world is filled with terror and hatred, there are always hopes and solutions.
