This activity involves having students make words from the same word family by rearranging letter cards. I like this activity because it makes "spelling" less scary for young students, and more interactive. It also allows them to see spelling patterns and form them with kinesthetic movement. This activity involves students turning cards over which contain words, pictures, etc. If the two cards that a student flips over contain the same sound, they get to go again. If they don't, the next student gets to go. The students has to say the words that the cards represent when they are turned over. I like this activity because it feels like a game and is very interactive while incorporating visuals, models, and verbal. The phonics for reading curriculum incorporates many different aspects of phonics instruction which provides for a very wholistic approach for my students and should help them succeed in reading words both out of and in context. The phonics for reading lessons include: sound drills, oral blending of sounds, reading new words by themselves, reading the words in context, and writing the words in sentences and by themselves. This resource teaches how to incorporate the instruction of high frequency words into phonics instruction. I believe this is very useful for my students -- many of them have goals to both decode words using phonics/word attack skills and also to be able to decode high frequency words. I like that this resource combines the two rather than teaching them in isolation. I believe this will help my students succeed by retaining high frequency words using logical phonics knowledge. Reading A-Z provides sound/symbol books in which students can practice the sound and symbol relationships introduced in the Reading A-Z phonics lessons with books featuring simple pictures with labels. Sound/Symbol Books can also be used as stand-alone reinforcements of important letter-sound correspondence that lead to successful decoding.
