The author asks himself a lot of tough questions if he should help the lady. For example "Should I take care of the girl and the boy, take them by their hands until they reach the end of that steep long concrete stairs?" This shows that he asks himself a lot of questions tough questions for helping the lady and her kids because he is very hesitant and he doesn't know what to do. He does not want the lady to think that he is trying to her them. The author never helped her and he regrets it to this day.
