In the story "The Veldt", there are five main characters. George Hadley the father, Lydia Hadley the mother, Peter Hadley the son, Wendy Hadley the daughter, and the house. In the story, the house is basically raising the children. The house provides everything the kids need from their shower, clothing, walking up the stairs, feeding them, and all other aspects of their everyday lives. The parents really don't have a role in their lives other than just place holders as their biological parents.

To the climax where we learn that the children know that the don't need their parents and don't feel any affection toward them.

"At dinner they ate alone, for Wendy and Peter were at a special plastic carnival across town and had televised home to say they'd be late, to ahead eating" (Bradbury 3). This quote shows how the kids feel that they don't need their parents, they didn't even bother to ask if they could be late for dinner, something most people would do.
