Why is this pattern that you are observing important? What does it reveal about the world? What bearing does it have on the lives of the characters you analyzed, and people like them in the real world?

The observable pattern is important because it reveals that people will do what they can with what the world gives them. Both of these characters are shown to assess their situations differently and deal with them accordingly. Based on the cards each person has been dealt, it really depends on the person and how they will react to it. Farooq is seen to go awry in reaction to the world he has witnessed when he joins a jihadist group. Isma is seen to try earnestly to break past the boundaries that others constantly try to impose upon her. This pattern reveals a strong encouragement of free will.

Homefire is a rendering of Sophocles' Antigone that tells the story of the Pasha family and the tragedy that befalls them when, in hopes of finding a place to belong, the youngest brother of the family, Parvaiz, joins ISIS and uncovers past wounds of his father, who did the same. Parvaiz has a twin sister, Aneeka, and older sister, Isma, who are both studying and planning on moving out of their family home. Isma is moving to America to study, which contributes to Parvaiz's feelings of abandonment and pushes him into the arms of Farooq, an ISIS recruiter who grooms Parvaiz to joining ISIS after telling him heroic stories of his father's time in ISIS . After there for months, Parvaiz decides he wants to go back home. He is unfortunately killed as he is trying to return home when Karamat puts a rule in place that British citizens who are disloyal and commit betrayal are unable to be buried on British soil.

He feels disconnected from mainstream society, which may be a reason that he is susceptible to extremist ideas. He is married and has children, and he does what he does in an effort to protect his family, although not much is known about his family. Isma is an unmarried female British Pakistani Muslim who is a graduate student in the US and has experienced discrimination due to her Muslim identity. She had a middle-class upbringing. Isma comes from a traditional family structure, which values obedience and respect for authority. He honestly thinks that he is doing others a favor by being a terrorist, and what he has been through supports this. He also thinks that by killing Parvaiz, he is getting rid of a traitor.

Isma, on the other hand, is weary of her environment because of how many obstacles she has come across due to her religion.
