It is important to have procedures and expectations for student development. I believe that these should be made clear to students on day 1. The importance of procedures instead of consequences are discussed by Kellough & Kellough. Their positive attitudes and passion for what they did drove me forward in my academic career and made me want to learn more and be the best student I could be. Have a copy of class procedures on the wall as well. It is important to maintain a structured learning environment and not to waste a minute of class time. This can be accomplished by laying out to the class how each class period should be. Establishing the classroom as a safe, welcoming environment is crucial.
