I am learning certain sailing terminology and commands in both English and German. Using the link provided by my class tutor.

https://www.aboutsailing.de/aboutsailing_LexikonDEUTSCH_ENGLISCH.htm

I'm only focusing on certain words, mainly words which will help me get around the habour or if I have to talk to another ship when I go around the German cost. Some of the words are direct translations so I do need to check the meaning. E.g. midships direct translation is Mitschiffs, which means middle ship. Midships in English means this and also means bring rudder to zero degrees. However it is very useful for finding other words.

Will say it's very hard to remember the words, or any German words simply because i don't use them, so i think a trip to Germany is needed.

I have a mate doing advance German. We try to speak German, and revise the content I have learned. He helps me on my pronunciation and grammar. I am limited currently with the conversations we can have in German, but hopefully in the future we can practice more. Currently it has helped quit a bit because, just going over what i learn't with someone helps to check i haven't misunderstood or got the wrong idea.

Translating Neunundneunzig Luftballons into English.

I printed out the German lyrics of Neunundneunzig Luftballons and tried to translate them. Using various websites, dictionary and help from friends and my German tutor tried to translate the lyrics to English.
Found it very hard, however was useful in getting me to thinking about the sentence not just the word, how the word changes meaning depending on subject. also I feel like i have a better understanding about word order in a sentence, which i have struggled with so far but am more confidant now, seeing it in use. i have also learnt some new vocabulary. Not shore how much use Fliegerstaffel will be but there are some useful words in there.

These are some websites I've been using to learn German.

So the first website I used was FluentU, to read up on model verbs. It is easy reading and clearly explains how to use them. I find this website to be very useful and would defiantly recommend. Link below to page I was using.
https://www.fluentu.com/blog/german/german-modal-verbs/
The second Website i Used was called Dartmouth which was not as good as FluentU but still helped me understand compound words. Pretty good explanation and understanding compound words has made everything a lot simpler, especially when considering gender of the noun.
https://www.dartmouth.edu/~deutsch/Grammatik/Wortbildung/Komposita.html

Duolingo Review

Overall it's a good tool to use when learning German I've found, but not very good for learning on it's own. It makes me revise some of the vocabulary and cases but not much revision of grammar. All the German I've learnt, I've learnt from my tutorials and looking up stuff online, I haven't learnt anything new with Duolingo. Would still use it, just to help me practice and revise the German I've learnt.

I watched Das Boot trying not to rely on the sub titles. I've watched it a few times in the past so I have good idea of most of the lines, however it doesn't make it any easier. In the fast past action bits I find it hard to distinguish the words and translate them before the next tidal wave of German hits you. However in the slow parts you can work out some words using my memory and what I'm watching. I feel like it has improved my pronunciation as you hear how they say the words. also found it really fun, it's more interesting trying to figure out what the saying. I think if watched it again in the future after expanding my vocabulary it be more useful bu still was good practice at listening to German.

I have found them useful in learning Vocabulary however, with exam pressure building up and the amount of course work on my course makes it hard to motivate myself to use flashcards. I think if I got into the swing of it, and made it a competition, rather then a task it would be more engaging. So currently it works but I have not got the most use out of them. I think for summer the be of more use, if I use them in my lunch breaks at work and compete against myself, it would be more useful then what i'm currently doing.

Was recommended to watch "Meet the Germans" by a mate. It's on a YouTube channel called DW News. It's quite funny and good to learn like German idioms and general knowledge in Germany. Just learn some vocabulary and grammar. I think it's very helpful and easy relaxed way to learn.
