Suleiman was the great ruler of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566 when he died. Suleiman made contributions to the Ottoman Empire that characterized him as magnificent. Some historians say Suleiman was power-seeking, however he was magnificent because he allowed religious freedom, expanded the Ottoman Empire, and gave slaves power.

The Expansion of the Ottoman Empire

Suleiman was able to expand the Empire and conquer territories because of his vicious army. The Turkish armies showed no mercy. His army was trained better than other armies, which had more emphasis on drill and discipline. Andro Linklater states, "The cutting edge of Ottoman armies was delivered by its fearsome horse-mounted archers, known as sipahis, or sometimes as timariots"(Linklater). The armies were strong and feared by others which made Suleiman look good. His armies were definitely a main reason for the expansion of the Ottoman Empire because of the fear others had when they saw them. As Alan Palmer states, "The Ottoman Empire was, in origin, a military institution, dedicated to fulfilling the sacred obligation of extending the 'Adobe of Islam'"(Palmer). Suleiman also had help from other countries to support his attacks. Many countries feared/respected Suleiman. As Jason Goodwin states, "Under no other sultan would the Ottoman Empire be so universally admired or feared. Suleymans corsairs plundered the ports of Spain. India rajahs begged his aid. So did the King of France"(Goodwin). Suleiman was a powerful man who was feared and most of his followers would do what he needed. According to Geoffrey Woodward Suleiman's successes include Belgrade, Egypt, Tripoli, Syria, the Balkins, Constantinople, and many others (Geoffrey Woodward). All of the wars that occurred were because Suleiman wanted to expand the Ottoman Empire and be the best. Suleiman was able to win because of his strong army and great power over allies. He was magnificent because of what he did for the Ottoman Empire, no ruler would ever be as good as Suleiman was.

Religious freedom amongst the followers of Suleiman

Everyone who lived in the Ottoman Empire during Suleiman's reign had religious freedom. This was made possible through the Millet System. Millet refers to as a religious defined person. Talip Kucukcan stated, "The millet system has been an important administrative apparatus to serve this end throughout Ottoman history. As a well known historian points out 'the Millet system emerged...the Ottoman administration take into account the organization and culture of the various religious-ethnic groups"(Talip, Kucukcan). The Millet system helped when dealing with religious groups, establishing a voice in each religion. Each millet had its own institution that cared for the poor and uncultured. There were schools, hospitals, and hospices for the poor or old. It was based on religion and ethnicity. The millet system emerged in the Ottoman Empire as a result of all the different religions shared amongst people. Minority subjects were now allowed to have an ethnic identity . With Suleiman in rule people such as Jews, could have an ethnic community without having to face hate. The Christian Orthodox developed the first millet in which their patriarchate was finally recognized. Andro Linklater also stated that military had religious freedom, allowing people to take any position whether they were Christian or Muslim. Ibrahim one of Suleiman's most trusted friend was also a Christian and Suleiman’s Grand Vizier, showing how Suleiman did not care what religion his people had as long as they were honest. This is part of the reason Suleiman was magnificent because not many others rulers would allow religious freedom. For example Europe was fighting because of the drifts in religion, if they had looked at what Suleiman had been doing then they could have avoided war.

Slaves had power

In the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman allowed powers among the slaves. Suleiman needed his slaves to help him with important decisions he needed to make. However slaves during Suleiman's reign were different from slaves in other regions. His slaves could have power gaining positions and move up the social class chain. In the video, Conquerors: Suleiman The Magnificent it talks about how slaves were in the military and were devoted to Suleiman, these slaves could move up in rank and be better known thanks to the sultan. Other slaves such as Roxelana one of the wives of Suleiman. She made her mark on the sultans heart and was one of the people he trusted the most. She was granted freedom from Suleiman and broke the chains of slavery. Another slave who he trusted with all his heart was Ibrahim. He helped Suleiman make every decision, becoming his adviser he rose to become an administer, general, and eventually Suleiman's Prime Minister or Grand Vizier. He freed prisoners and lowered taxes with the help of Ibrahim. Suleiman was a fair and just person not judging people for their social status, only that they were true and honest to themselves and others.
