**** EDITED TO ADD - You are just talking to someone in an elevator or room. You don't have timne to search for a source or read from something. :-) Just share what you've learned or what sticks out to you based on your context at the moment--teacher, tutor, parent, student, etc.*** You’ve been asked to explain the Science of Reading to a principal or parent in 1 minute. What would you say? Add your short video or voice note.

The Science of Reading is basically all the research we have about how the brain actually learns to read. What we now know is that reading isn’t natural—it has to be taught in a very structured way. Kids learn best when we teach them the building blocks: how sounds work in words, how letters connect to those sounds, how to blend and break apart words, and how to build vocabulary and comprehension. It’s not about guessing or relying on pictures; it’s about giving students a clear, step-by-step pathway so every child—including those with dyslexia—can become a confident, successful reader. It’s really about using what works, not just what we’ve always done.

The Science of Reading (SoR) is the blueprint for teaching children how to read, as well as a guideline for teachers on how to successfully teach students to read. It's a compilation of all the research conducted over time about how children learn. The major takeaway from SoR is that, in order to teach kids to read, you need to break words down into their smallest components (letters, syllables, chunks). Students can't be expected to know how to read fluently off the bat -- they need to know the basics first. SoR is the foundation for eventual reading fluency.
