http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/11/health/toxic-tap-water-flint-michigan/index.html - how tap water became toxic in flint michigan

In Flint, Michigan residents were unable to get clean water from their taps. About two years ago the state made a crucial mistake, they switched their original water supply which was from Lake Huron. They switched from Lake Huron to the Flint River because it would cost them less. When they received water from Lake Huron they would have to pay Detroit for it, the Flint River has been known by the some of the Michigan citizens to be dirty so much so they didn’t believe that they were switching to it. Apparently the switch was only suppose to be temporary while the state put in a supply line to Lake Huron. Residents realized that their water looked, smelled and tasted weird, the water contained much more iron than it previously had. Studies show the Flint River is 19 times more corrosive than Lake Huron. The water was corroding the iron, turning the tap water brown. The DEQ had not been treating the water with anti-corrosive agent, this in violation of the federal law. Along with the iron, lead was also in their tap water. Since the water was untreated and going through lead pipes, the lead would rub off on the water. This resulted in health problems for the people drinking the water, including lead poisoning. This problem was kept in the dark for nearly 18 months until a local doctor, Mona Hanna-Attisha, brought it to the public's attention.

This relates to the environment since the Flint River was not kept clean. It had been polluted by people, therefore making the natural process of water filtering not effective. If the river was clean they would have faced less problems, this put into perspective how people should start to care more about the environment because it can effect them negatively also. This makes me frustrated that the problems of the river being unkempt was only brought to attention once it started creating problems for the people. Once this problem was recognized they didn’t acknowledge the river. They focused on getting clean from somewhere else instead of fixing the source itself.

- controversial ja

In Jakarta Bay, developers have received the go ahead to continue their project in creating 17 man made small artificial islands just off the coast of Jakarta. Their construction was halted because of the environmental impacts. The Jakarta Bay was also a very common spot to fish, so if they continued the building it could destroy some of the local fisherman businesses. Even though this project could destroy habitats, it has environmental benefits as well. These include the reduction of pollution. This would occur because it is off the coast of a densely packed city, moving them over to the islands would decrease the amount that goes into the city. As the building of the islands continues there is no way around harming the environment or changing it. It will destroy habitats, increase high tides, increase flooding, and the building debris will end up in the water.

In this article I personally felt that the cons out weighed the pros of construction project in Jakarta Bay. There is no getting back the wildlife that they are destroying, they are building on top of ocean habitats so they can have more land space. Moving people from the city to the islands will help the environment once it is done, but the building of the islands will create more problems that cannot be fixed. It is upsetting that once again people put themselves in a position to harm the environment to make conditions more comfortable for themselves.

The oil pipeline along the bank of the Missouri has created a lot of controversy. Native Americans who have been in protest peacefully are now pushing harder to stand up for their tribal rights. They encourage everyone to join as they are not just protesting the pipeline but also other environmental issues, like clean water, environmental justice, and a working climate. Even though in the past the Native Americans constantly failed when fighting against the United States, this time it there could be a different result. Some of the protesters have stood up to police dogs, pepper spray, military tanks, and swat teams, they have done all of this peacefully. Their protests have paid off, the White House has halted the construction of the oil pipeline temporarily. Since the oil company and its allies are strong enough and have enough money, they can withstand their halted project. The Native Americans continue to protest at the banks that lent money to the building of the oil pipeline. Environmentally, the pipeline can cause water pollution since it is along the bank of Missouri and it can increase global warming.

Fossil fuels have become very important to this generation, and they will remain important. We have found something that helps making activities for us easier. Fossil fuels cannot just disappear or go out of use, I think that we should not put them over certain things can damage our environment. We have all been taught the effects of water pollution and global warming, it takes awhile to resolve the problems that they cause and some are not reversible.

A new soap molecule has been created, it is made from renewable resources and it can reduce the amount of chemicals that are used in cleaning products. This is amazing for the environment! Added onto the environmental benefit, the soap cleans better than some of the other conventional soaps that use chemicals. This can cause a major impact on the cleaning product industry. The soaps are made from natural products such as corn, soybeans and coconut. Many people will like how this soap is more organic than the ones made with fossil fuels. Tests have been showing how this new soap works well in all water conditions unlike the previous kinds. This soap when washed down the drain or disposed will be much better for the environment since it is biodegradable.

I think that such a small thing such as a new soap molecule being made can have a dramatic effect on the environment. Once people start using the eco friendly soap we will have less polluted water. I don’t think that many people understand the fact that such a small thing can have such a big impact. Over time I have learned how much one person can affect the environment, if one family changed their soap to this one it can even make a difference. Since people have recently been leaning toward everything organic this will be a big change.

The condor is an endangered species that was taken in by scientists when there were only twenty two left. Even though it had cost them millions of dollars they took them in to increase their numbers, the did want North America’s largest flying bird to go extinct. They had almost been wiped out because of habitat loss, hunting, and eating the carcasses that had been shot with lead bullets which poisoned them. Now there are more than 200 condors in California, Arizona and northern Mexico. The condor is an example of how endangered species can be brought back into numbers. Currently there are about 20,000 plants and animals on the verge of extinction.

I find it very scary the amount of endangered species that are at risk of going extinct because of human behavior. We have watched the numbers dwindle down until they are at a critical point or until they no longer exist. Many of these species have an impact on the environment, every living things plays a part in our world. I am a big animal advocate and I think that we should take all measures to preserve all species of animals, especially the ones that are mainly caused by human effects.

Recently action has been taken to help the shrinking polar bear population. Since their numbers are getting so low they will soon be protected under the ESA, the endangered species act. The main issue for the decreasing numbers of polar bears is the temperature increasing. Global warming has greatly affected polar bears, their habitats are melting. The other reasons it is endangered is because of pollution and hunting. There are 25,000 still remaining, cubs have a harder time surviving in the changing conditions than the older ones do. Conservation groups want the United States government to pass a law to reduce greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases cause global warming, if this was passed it would significantly help out the existing polar bears.

Global warming is going getting worse as time goes on, I personally do not think that enough measures are being taken to change this. Global warming has affected countless environmental things, some which cannot be fixed now. Polar bears are mainly going extinct because of humans, we increase global tremendously. It is unfair how other species have to suffer from our lack of caring.
