Khaled Hosseini was born in March 4th, 1965 in Afghanistan, Kabul. He is recognized for his accurate depictions of his home country in his novels such as "A Thousand Splendid Suns", "Sea Prayer", and most notably "the Kite Runner". In his younger years, Hosseini was raised by his father Nassar, who was a diplomat for the Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs', and his mother, an educational instructor for an all-girls high school, for which she taught the Persian language. He also was among five siblings of his family, with himself being the oldest.
In 1976, Hosseini's family had moved to Paris, where his father worked at the Afghan embassy stationed there. Before they thought they could return home, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was in motion; making their plan on returning home impossible. Luckily, Hosseini and his family were granted political asylum within the United States, and later settled in California.
Almost a decade later, Hosseini had begun attending medical school at the University of California, San Diego. He registered private practice as an internist in 1996, three years after obtaining his medical degree. In 2001, Hosseini began working on the Kite Runner, which on occasions he would work on a few hours before working on his medical practices.

The Kite Runner begins within the rugged city of Kabul, Afghanistan, taking place between early 1970s and early 2000s. The main character, Amir, struggles to find his purpose within the world, all the while he struggles to survive political downfall of his home country. With a little research as to find historic influence behind the book, it's easy to see that the Kite Runner is based off the Afghanistan conflict which occurred in 1978 and still on going. Before the conflict began, Afghanistan was previously a monarch up until it was overthrown by an Afghan coup which sparked a series of conflicts within the war-torn country in 1973.
Half a decade later, the Saur Revolution was beginning to take hold, this was due the uprising of a political group known as the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) who had overthrown the government of the Republic of Afghanistan. Afterwards, the rebels then established themselves as a Communist state, which came to be known as the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
In 1979, the Soviets backed the Communist State, which was dealing with a series of rebellions that was taking place across the country. Collectively, these series of rebels eventually came to be known as "the Mujaideen", whom they were backed by countries such as the United States, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Israel, Iran, Egypt, and West Germany. In 1989, after almost a decade of large-scale conflicts, the Soviet Union pulled out it's troops from Afghanistan, ultimately ending that period of conflict.
In 1992, conflict was still raging between the Afghan government and the Mujaideen until the Republic of Afghanistan fell that very same year. Afterwards, the Mujaideen then named themselves as the Islamic State of Afghanistan. Not long after, many Mujaideen groups withdrew their support and begin fighting the Islamic State. Eventually, the Taliban came to light and captured Kabul, from which they temporarily established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Today, war still plagues the country three decades later, with little to no hope of the Afghan conflict ever ending.

Amir-

In the beginning of the story, we are first introduced to Amir in the starting time period on December of 2001. As the story shifts to his childhood in 1975, we get a more in-depth look in his character. Amir grew up with a sense of self superiority, always wanting something, feeling that he deserves everything if repaid by his hands. This flawed characteristic takes a hold of him when he attacks his best friend, Hassan, for receiving more affection from his father than him. This desire to please his father motivates his actions, as well as his decisions during the early chapters of the novel. Back to his adult years, Amir presents himself as intuitive and empathetic, which comes from a history filled with guilt and regrets.

Hassan-

A compassionate Best friend, as well as a loyal companion to Amir, Hassan is a type of person who's always attentive and steadfast. Always expressing bound qualities of selflessness, intelligence, and bravery, all originating from a passion for knowledge. Despite his highly regarded qualities, which are vastly rare during a time period of constant revolutions and endless violence, he's viewed as an impecunious Hazara; people who were considered deficient to Afghan society. He plays as a huge catalyst for Amir's story throughout the novel.

Baba-

Presented early in the story, Baba is a successful business man whose mainly cold towards his children Amir and Hassan. His ideology is of one that relies on looking after ones self, never backing down from an opportunity that may benefit himself.

Ali-

A father figure to Hassan, Ali is a person who acts with humility despite his disabilities and disfigured facial features due to polio. He serves under Baba as a helper who takes care of his children and local house.

Sohrab
In the later parts of the story, Sohrab is seen to be the son of Hassan and Farzana and also shares the same ethnicity as his father. Sohrab mainly plays as a center piece of the plot in the later chapters of the story.

Assef-

Serves as the main adversary of the story, Assef is written as a reflection of every of flaw of the state of Afghanistan. His desire is to discriminate, and rid Afghanistan of the outcastes of Hazaras. He's apathetic and ferocious when it comes to sexual or brutal violence.

The Kite Runner provides a setting that many may recognized due to the sheer amount of terror that had (and still is) taking place. The story takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan occurring between two periods; early 1970s and 2001. From a general view point, Afghanistan is a landlocked country which delivers crossroads that are open to traders and conquerors; the war torn country also contains remnants of it's past which date back about 2000 B.C, and can still be seen in places such as Kabul, Kandahar, Mazar-l-Sharif, and Herat.
