An event that shaped my personal identity was when my parents divorced when I was three years old, causing me to live in two separate households. Although this is a common situation that a lot of kids in the US experience, it was difficult for me because I had to switch between two different cities and families. Still, this helped me become more independent and appreciate spending time with my family much more.

As a Filipino-American, I find nice to experience two different cultures. One of my family and one of where I was born. A cultural event that shaped my life was when I went out of the country for the first time to see my parents' homeland, the Philippines. It was really eye-opening because I was not only able to meet the rest of my family, but I was able to understand how my parents grew up.

On my junior year of high school, I became president of one of the clubs that was part of a larger student organization. This helped make friends from all over the Bay Area and allowed me to get more involved in my community. By doing service projects such as volunteering for the Walk to End Alzheimers and cleaning up beaches, I felt like I was doing a small part to better my environment. Being President has its challenges, but it has taught me many leadership skills such as time management and compassion.

The shape of my river is mostly straight but it does have its bumps. I realized that I am more privileged than others as I go to a well funded school and have a family that is present in my life, but I do have my struggles both physically and mentally.
Some of my bumps include struggling through high school as I try to balance school work, proper sleep, and a social life. As well as losing people in my life and meeting new ones. There's not many smooth transitions but there are improvements throughout the river.

Most of the scenery surrounding my river is my friends and family. For example throughout my childhood, the people who supported me and took care of me were my grandparents because my parents were still adjusting to the United States, working all the time and dealing with being separated. As I started school, I depended on my friends but as the years passed, some would move and sometimes our friendships would just fade. Still, as I grow up I am meeting new people and learning to become more independent.

I would say I am experiencing a bump in my river as we adjust to new conditions in this global pandemic. Still, it is not that big as my situations is not as bad compared to other people. I guess I'm just learning to find the positives each day.

Hopefully, my river will transition to a smoother and straighter state, but if anything I learned life can be unpredictable and as the state or scenery of a river changes, it is important to adapt and evolve.
