This is a Nkisi, a figure from what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nkisis are connected to Voodoo spiritualist practices. Most people associate Voodoo dolls like this with casting harmful spells on enemies but Minkisi (the plural of Nkisi) are rather complex cultural artifacts used both for healing and destruction. Unlike other religious conceptions of 'good' and 'evil', these spiritual containers show a different world view in which notions of 'good and evil' are two sides of the same coin - a necessary partnership - rather than a struggle for 'good' against 'evil'.

You probably know the guillotine was a symbol of violence and tyranny and responsible for thousands of brutal deaths - 40,000 approximately. You might also know it was invented as a humane method of execution during the French revolution and that its inventor was also executed by it. Like most people, you probably associate it with tyranny and brutality in humanity's distant past, but the last execution with this blade in Europe took place only 41 years ago, in Marseilles, France, 1977; which is disturbingly recent.
