https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/01/world/europe/ukraine-refugee-discrimination.html

This article demonstrates how social relations connect to the body. While Ukrainians are attempting to flee from their country as Russia attacks, racism runs rampant at the borders. White Ukrainians are much more likely to be given the privilege of crossing into a different country, while Black Ukrainians are told by government workers that they aren't allowed. Clearly, even in times of crisis, people and countries alike can't seem to look past race, and as a result, greatly privilege some people over others when everyone should be able to gain safety no matter what they look like.

But according to the article, this tradition is supposed to signify a women's fertility and showcase that she's ready for marriage. The article states: "The belief is that it is a cultural ornament that symbolizes her strength and self-esteem. It is also seen as a mark of bravery and perseverance." This ties with identity, because the practice of lip plates closely ties to the way one views themselves, and how other groups view them. Specifically, that women feel better about the way they look when using lip plates (and that this appeals to other groups).

This article discusses India's relationship with colorism and "whiteness". The author shared that when she was born her grandmother had told her grandfather “A girl is born. She is dark-complexioned. You better prepare for her future.” In India, there is huge stigmatization about skin color and its relationship with class, socialization, and marriageability. Much of India's infatuation regarding fairer skin originated in the 14-20th centuries when the Dutch, French, Portuguese, and British invaded, settled, and colonized India. "During the British Empire, skin tone prejudice became formally engrained; the colonizers kept light-skinned Indians as allies, giving them extra advantages over the rest of the “blacks.”". It was also noted that many of the lower-class citizens had darker skin due to hard labor in the sun. This further perpetuated "Whiteness" as lighter skin indicated white-collar jobs and thus higher status/class.

Through this article, the social relation of identity can be explored. Female genital mutilation is an often seen practice in India, and is often perpetuated generationally and by the women of the family. Identity is defined as how you view yourself, as well as how others view you. This article details how society views women as submissive, pure, and someone that must be subdued. By cutting off parts of the genitalia, libido, hysteria, and other normal sexuality related actions can be reduced. This all ties back to how society and women view themselves as subordinate to men.
