One of my favorite children's books growing up was "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". I found it so engaging as a reading, and I have loved reading it to my younger siblings and students I have worked with. I find this book is a good way to explain metamorphosis: how caterpillars change into butterflies, in a way that children can understand. The concept all animals need food in order to live and grow (K-LS1-1).

Affordances:

The story does a great job of keeping students engaged. It breaks the life cycle of a butterfly down into such simple terms that I feel like Kindergarteners have an easy time understanding. The bright illustrations help provide visuals to make the story easy to follow along with.

Limitations:

This book may be too difficult for kindergarteners to read on their own; however, I think it would be a great class read aloud book. The book is 32 pages which may be a little long, but the pages are not very lengthy so the story stays engaging.

Affordances:

This book is very reader friendly for kindergarteners as it is made for 3-6 year olds. Additionally, the colorful pictures make the story engaging and facts about the butterfly's life cycle are broken down into simple terms for children to understand.

Limitations:

This book is also 32 pages which could feel a little long for kindergartners to read on their own. Furthermore, some students may find this harder to follow along with since it is less of a plot based story and more of an informational book.

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly Interactive Online Game & Video

From the "about" page of the website: This page contains an interactive online game on the stages in the butterfly’s life cycle. It replaces a worksheet on the topic and is convenient since players can make several attempts until they get to understand all the stages. A butterfly first lays eggs that mature into a caterpillar. The caterpillar to butterfly process may last between 5 to 21 days depending on the species. In this game, children will drag and drop the egg in stage one and the rest of the stages. It is an example of complete metamorphosis.

Affordances:

This website allows for students to practice ordering the butterfly life cycle and pairing the correct term to the correlating illustration. Additionally, this website offers an informational video for the students to watch. Finally, it has additional resources that can be printed off if further instruction on this topic is desired.

Limitations:

The website does not have a way to change the order of the cycle; therefore, once the students do it a few times, they will likely have it memorized. However, I still feel it is a good tool for them to practice the life cycle. Secondarily, some of the resources that are so great about this website do have to be printed off by the teacher; thus, taking away from some of the technology aspect of it.
