In the last module, we read about the Baroque period, and as soon as I heard Bach I thought of our past readings. The song I heard first was "Brandenburg Concerto #5 in D," which is a heavily string-driven piece. The tempo is pretty quick, which made me feel motivated and energetic, with a light and airy feel. This style and period of musical works is termed "classical" because it included some of the greatest composers in the history of the world, many of whom are globally known and recognized. This period set the foundation for future orchestral pieces and is the inspiration for composers and performers today. In the article written by Sarah Haefeli, she explains the concept of "The Work," which was a prominent theme in the classical music period. The sound of this song is very similar to the Bach piece I heard, but the name of the composer did not sound very familiar, so I assumed it was not a classical piece. However, by the rhythm, timbre, and instrumentation being similar to what I had heard from other Classical composers, I knew this selection was from the same period. This symphony by Boccherini had a very "hum-able" melody and was definitely stuck in my head for most of Saturday. As the piece transitioned to different sections, I could hear the form change by the addition of different wind instruments, specifically a flute and oboe. The way the performers are all dressed the same, in black suits, reminds me of a discussion we had in class about the focus of performances. They are all dressed the same because the music is the most important thing, especially in the Western classical music period. They must all look the same so that no one sticks out as more important than another, and they let the music speak for them instead of their looks.
