With this lesson man is able to learn for himself, and not conform to socially “acceptable” and find new ways to look at the world.

Important Quotes:

“...but every hour and season yield its tribute of delight; for every hour and change corresponds and authorizes a different state of the mind, from breathless noon to grimmest midnight.”

“Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislation? Why has every man a conscience, then?”

“Familiar as the voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato, and Milton is, that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men but what they thought.”

I appreciate the poem as it serves as a noble plea for man to use their individuality to benefit the world. Whitman asks readers to use their uniqueness to "contribute a verse," to life, which demonstrates how one's greater purpose should be to use their individuality to leave the world better than they found it. Dead Poet's Society also encourages this trait of individuality, which I support, as Mr. Keating tries to encourage his students to think for themselves; a characteristic I think is very important for young adults to learn, so they are not deceived by the new things around them.
