My family hasn't adopted a child, but my younger brother is an older version of Hakeem, unfortunately. It turns out that the woman is a relative to the fallen friend and was painting a mural in his dedication.

I've never known a single member of my family who joined the armed forces, in the U.S or otherwise. This is mainly because my parents thought it was more important to attend college. I wouldn't know what it's like hoping that a relative of yours will come back from a war they have no way to control.

Vortex, and the rest of the Insignia trilogy, is set in the not-so-distant future, although it isn't specified when exactly. As a result, the technology is highly advanced and cutting-edge.

This would be considered a window, as not much of the technology then is heard of now, and some of it is quite scary, such as the neural processors that augment intellect and are inserted in the brain. It isn't just the technology, but the world predicted by the author of Vortex: companies dominating the world, the elimination of the middle class altogether, giant mile-wide floating billboards projecting ads down to Earth, all of this is a sign of the corporate oligarchy that has taken over the world. I would definitely not want that, an can only imagine a world like the one described.

The author wrote this so it would help us visualize Ms. Brown as a nice person, and it adds to the story by adding the the teacher's description.

She resembled some sort of fish."
This would be a simile, as the author is comparing her(Wyatt) to a fish using the world "resembled", which is similar to like.
This is effective as it makes you think about how Wyatt could look like a fish, and the descriptors only serve to help that.
It's included to make us think about a fish and how Wyatt looked like a fish in that sentence, and it helps us understand the book by indirectly telling us that some characters are humorous.

Instead of hiding it like others, he proudly shows it on display in his bunk, and other people ocm in and "congratulate" him. Wyatt, his friend, tells him to remove it from display and says it's nothing to be proud of.
We learn what Wyatt would have done in Tom's place, and we also learn that Wyatt is wiser and wants to advise Tom, who is a good friend.
This section is important as we learn about how Wyatt wants to help her friends, especially Tom, who is a troublemaker. This reveals and adds on to Wyatt's character profile, making her seem like a really good friend.
We can infer that Wyatt wants to keep Top out of trouble and is looking out for him.

The narrator unfairly blames Brooke as the reason that her dad left her, and doesn't defend Brooke; another counselor does.
This section is important as we learn the the narrator isn't a very forgiving person, and we also are told that the group of campers don't like Brooke, and they might be envious or just mad at her.
We can infer that Brooke isn't happy as she had her "head down" and isn't used to being shamed in public.

It is important for the reader to know as much as he/she can about the problem that the main plot revolves around. This has an effect on the reader and sets the tone(and mood) for much of the rest of the story: Terry's dad's "blank-outs" happen throughout the rest of the story, and so do Terry's quests to learn more about why they happen. It also affects the reader by helping them understand at the very beginning.

Despite the words of Terry and his mom, his eyes still would be away, and would only recover on his own. The phrase could also mean moments when his dad was "dead" for not stopping the dawn and sun; he would relapse into that memory and be dead" to the present.

A theme that I could support is asking for help and talking about hard issues, both of which Terry's dad failed to do until the end of the short story "Stop the Sun". The piece of evidence I uncovered would be "The psychiatrists tell me that if I talk bout it, the whole thing will go away. But
they don’t know. They weren’t there.(Paulsen)" This shows that even though psychiatrists recommended talking and getting help about his memories, Dad refused to, as he thought it wouldn't help. But once he let it all out to Terry, we could infer that after, both father and son were more understanding of each other.

In experimenting with his powers, he created the Shadow Fold, a long stretch of darkness with terrifying monsters where his power is useless. He wants Alina, who is the main character and can summon light, to be his Queen, but she doesn't want to spend her years as a servant to him, her powers getting exploited in the Fold. She is outcasted along with fellow Grisha, or humans capable of "magic", none of which have her light-summoning power. Together, in Siege and Storm, they must overthrow the Darkling, kill him, and reunite Ravka by destroying the Shadow Fold.
There is mainly one conflict, and everything Alina and her Grisha friends do is directed at the operation for freeing Ravka; despite being underpowered, Alina's power is unmatched by anyone except the Darkling himself. When the time comes, one will kill the other.
Alina is affected by the conflict as she is thrown out of her Grisha school and has the heavy burden of reuniting her country; so are her friends. The Darkling is affected since his massive powers come at the cost of his well-being.

For example, Nina and Matthias', witch and witch-hunters' relationship turned them from bitter enemies from opposing countries to lovers united in the main cause of the book. The time spent together brought these two current allies close, and they forged important bonds that helps move the plot along.

Wylan is the son of the antagonist, kicked out of the villain's house due to his illiteracy. His mother, kept in captivity for nearly a decade, still managed to recognize him instantly.

Jesper is from Novyi Zem, a much wealthier and kinder country than either Ravka or Kerch. Colm, his dad, and Aditi, his mom, work on a farm controlling jurda, a common stimulant. However, Jesper and Aditi are both Grisha, and can heal and manipulate earthly materials. But Colm doesn't want either of them to get found out, so he forces them to not use their powers.

One day, a man shows up and beckons Aditi, a healer, to help heal his daughters, who fell ill after drinking contaminated water. Colm begs his wife not to go, but she insists. She stays the night drawing out the poison from the girl who survived, but when morning comes and Colm and Jesper visit her, she faints from exposure and passes away shortly after.

When Colm arrives in Kerch to check on Jesper, he is aghast to learn that Jesper has made many untrustworthy Grisha friends, leading to his reluctance to work with them to 'save the world'.

Pekka Rollins, king of the Barrel and leader of the Dime Lions, was the one who conned Kaz and his family when they first arrived in Ketterdam. With no money to combat the plague, all of the family but Kaz had died, making the lone survivor swear vengeance "brick by brick" on Rollins.
Kaz started his own gang with the sole purpose of making Pekka suffer. Pekka, though, didn't remember that Kaz used to be a little boy that he'd conned. However, both were so similar that they attempted the same heist on the same place... at the same time. Unfortunately, Brekker was earlier and got caught by the Dime Lions.

While Rollins was gloating, Kaz manages to make an escape and swears vengeance yet again: at the end of the series, Rollins is ousted and forced to flee the city.

The relationship between Kaz and Pekka is quite lopsided: Pekka treats Kaz like any other head of a gang, while Kaz would do anything to destroy Rollins, his gang, and influence.

Fjerda, home to Matthias, hates Grisha like nina and has witch-hunter units to kill them in masses. Over time, though, he grows stronger and far more clever than any of his siblings or friends, and he has the courage to challenge the king of the forest(and loses).

I guess you could say that, in a way, I was an underdog from the start of my life. My family, compared to their friends, wasn't the richest, and my brother required extensive care.
